Wednesday DVD Review™
“Give nothing … but take from them … EVERYTHING!”As promised in last week’s review, today I will talk about what can arguably called the man movie of the current century – all homoerotic jokes aside. This movie blends all of the aspects that draw men to film and sends them flying at us with visceral force and palatable intensity. This movie literally increases testosterone levels in its audience. This movie is about war, honor, duty, and courage. THIS … IS … 300!!!

For those who happened to be living under a rock, let me quickly lift it and lend you a brief look into the backdrop of the story. 300 tells the tale of 300 Spartan warriors – led by the king Leonidis - who choose, against the will of the ruling council of the country, to oppose the greatest single army of slaves and soldiers that had been assembled in history, the Persian empire and it’s God-King Xerxes. The entire movie recreates the Battle of Themopylae, which the director Zack Snyder claims is done with 90% accuracy during an MTV interview. Other historians agree, or disagree, to varying levels on the historical measure that is present in the film.(1)
Now, onto the movie review. We have all seen films of incredible beauty and cinematography in the past. Epic shots of clashing armies on the fields in Braveheart and the Lord of the Rings trilogies, we have seen beautiful swordplay in movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and The Matrix introduced us to the wonders of “bullet time”. However, 300 takes the best of each of those and merges them into a single production. The battles may be in smaller scale than in the references above, but are no less wonderfully choreographed and executed. The swordplay not as eloquent and fanciful as the Asian-themed listing, but still convey a oneness with the spear and sword that makes a person’s jaw drop. And finally, while none of the Spartans possessed the mystical power of Neo, the slow motion throughout all the battle scenes was simply awesome and conveyed the true fluidity and mastery in which the Spartans moved and fought.
The presentation of the movie in the theaters was gritty, and with a very noticeable fingerprint of Frank Miller. The visuals were often stylized, with novel and dramatic scene sequences never before seen on the screen. Even though the movie used a rather limited color pallet, the blacks and whites, the bronze and crimson, and other more earthy tones made the film seem physical on the screen. While this may not have highlighted all that the HD-DVD player that now sits on my AV rack can do, it still was a visual sensation to the eyes that is a sight to behold. The audio is, for lack of a better term, war. War with swords classing, men screaming, horses squealing … all you would expect in an epic fight … and then set to a rock soundtrack. It was simply brilliant.
The casting and acting in the movie was as impressive as production of the film. Every single actor, whether playing King or Queen of Sparta, the rogue and backstabbing council member, or the God who wished to rule over the Greek lands, all made you believe that they were plucked out of time and put to the screen for this role and this role alone. Mix into that some fantastical creatures and creations in the forms of the Immortals, or other ‘generals’ which the Persians (supposedly) employed, and you have a cast of characters truly worthy of the script.
The only thing I cannot yet comment on, but will save for a future blog, are the extras on the HD-DVD. Yes, I was not mistaking earlier – this movie made me buy the HD-DVD player. With my personal DVD collection coming close to 400, I had been resisting the temptation whereas I already own an upscaling Samsung DVD player. The price of the HD-DVDs is a problem, but then I noticed that relatively new releases make their way to Ebay, in new and sealed offerings, at prices near to their regular counterparts. Then finally, with enough confirmation that I should see a noticeable difference on my 65” Mitsubishi Diamond RP HDTV, and the current deal ($179 + 5 free movies), I took the dive. And I will never regret doing so. But that again, my friends, is topic for another blog.
In closing, 300 came into my house and immediately, with its first watching, moved into my personal “favorite 5” list of titles I own. If I can find a canvas transfer, the poster might also earn one of the coveted spaces on my wall … but we will see.

Uncle Balek^2
Well, not content to go as far as the doctors would have let her (would have been induced on Monday), my sister took matters into her own hands and delivered a healthy, happy set of twins on Friday evening. Mother and children are doing well, and recovering nicely over at the Naval Medical Center in Washington.
I've lost track of exactly how many nieces and nephews this makes for me...I think it's somewhere in the low 20s now. ;) My wife comes from a rather large family (she's 8th of 10), and most of her siblings are married with children.
To help with the transition and allow my brother-in-law to participate in the births, my wife went down early Friday afternoon to take care of their 2 year old little girl. That leaves me playing Mr. Mom for five or so days until my parents make it into town as reserves. Of course the first full day of my trial was full on, with a birthday part to shuttle one of my boys to and from, and then a collegiate graduation party for a neighbors daughter. The former was typical, whereas the later was pretty nice. I'm not an overly social person, but with the coaxing of my wife, I put the introspective side of me aside and went along to have a good time. The kegs helped. ;) That, and late in the evening, one of my neighbors introduced me to
I suppose if you're going to try scotch for the first time, that's the way to do it eh? Now, how to tell the wife that we need a $150 bottle of liquor in our cabinet...hmm.

Wednesday DVD Review™
Morning everyone…it’s been quite a dry spell with regards to blog-able material as of late, so I’ve been on the prowl for something that I can replicate on a semi-regular basis. In thinking about my passions – outside of gaming – as potential inspiration, I’m going to focus on my modest DVD collection (fairly out of date…I sense a weekend project) as a source. Each Tuesday, I make a regular pilgrimage to Best Buy for the weekly new releases on DVD. Where my wife and I started our family on the young side, we haven’t had much of a chance to go to the theaters in years gone by. That leaves us to waiting for DVD. Not an issue, since I’ve managed to build a rather nice home theater setup over the years (65” Mistsu Diamond HDTV, 600+W 5.1 surround, etc). Anyways, we’ll leave the set-up for another blog, and move on to the inaugural review…

I'll quickly note here at the start that neither my wife nor I were educated in this part of U.S. history before the DVD hit the tray - and that was probably for the best. Directed by David Fincher, who also brought us such gems as Fight Club and Se7en, Zodiac depicts the real-life story of a state gripped in fear, uncertainity, and paranoia back in the late 1960s and 1970s. The story's title character is a serial killer who spends years twarting police as he kills multiple people in California. Via letters with homemade cyphers, to phone calls, the Zodiac plays both the police of the era and the media in some sick mental game of hide-and-seek for reasons that people can only speculate to. Important to note that, while directed by Fincher, despite what you'd think the movie is not gory or even more than moderately violent. Instead, the director and staff build an edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller that delivers. The movie has a very talented cast, including Robert Downey and Mark Ruffalo playing very real, believable characters.
The movie is long, over two and a half hours in length, and towards the end it feels that way...but not necessarily in a bad way. Both my wife and I found ourselves litterly getting jumpy as the movie started to climax and reach conclusion, thinking that the answer and identity of the Zodiac was just around the corner. However, throughout the movie we had a common theme that kept running through our heads - of how quaint, or even naive, people and law enforcement of that era were. It was remarkable to see the depictation of how the criminal system worked (or rather didn't) in a world without cell phones, fax machines, or the end-all-be-all Internet. The script was written in such detail that you feel that you are truly following the crime through the years in fast-forward, and become drawn into its ultimate resolution. I think that alone is noteworthy and a true indication of a great thriller.
The visuals and sound for the movie were solid, but nothing necessarily remarkable. No glitch or high tech effects present, nor really warranted. The movie did have the gritty, "old" feel to it in the depiction of the working and living environments of the time. Again, this movie was about the story, and then even more so about the characters behind that story.
Overall, if you enjoy a good thriller, let alone one based on a true event in history, then I'd recommend Zodiac without hesitation. While the replay value of the movie isn't terribly hot (given that it will be hard to develop the emotional ties to the characters as strongly the second time around), it was still worth the price of admission and a spot in my collection.
Next week: 300. I need say no more.

Life Lessons By Comic™
Insomnia sucks.
Plain and simple, not being able to fall and/or stay asleep reliably is just about one of the worst things I can imagine. It’s absolutely maddening to know you should be asleep, know you want to be asleep, know that your wife next to you is asleep, but just can’t fall asleep.
Then, combine that with the idea of sleep medications. I finally broke down and visited my family physician, who promptly prescribed me some Ambien CR. His response to the whole thing was “notice what is on television more and more lately…this isn’t just a small issue with society.” I was initially relieved but then put off by that response. Who gives a rats ass if half my neighbors are experiencing the same thing. I want to know why I can’t sleep well all the time. I should have fought back a little, but to be honest, I knew that the prescription would work, so I nodded absently and took the script.
Then finally, there’s the mental idea of being on a sleep aid. I don’t like it. Hell, I don’t like being on any medication unless I need to. I don’t like taking the Claritin for my allergies, but can’t take summer without it. I guess it all stems back to my father, who abhorred all kinds of medicines when I was growing up. That was tough for him, given that my mother is a nurse. Some of the fights of her trying to choke down meds on him, looking back on it, were rather comical. But now I find myself fighting the idea that I need the Ambien to get a good nights sleep. Is it just in my mind? Or do I really have the issue my doctor said and should just accept it.
/me continues to be all kinds of confused.
Oh well, all I know is when I do take it, they are some of the best nights of sleep I can ever recall. Shouldn’t that be enough…?
