Baseball games
So, the pints 1 baseball season kicks off Friday the 30th. I am coaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders this year. I have a total of 16 kids on the team. I am going to find it very tough to get all 16 kids in a single 5 inning game. Somewhere along the way, parents have come to believe that for $15, their kid should be allowed to play in every game. I too am a big believer in that, but I also know that if my kid is playing baseball, they are gonna know how to catch, throw and bat before they are on the team.
Somewhere along the way, parents have forgot, or denied their kids play time. I live in a small town, in which I grew up in, and by the time I was in second grade, I could do the basics at baseball. It was not uncommon to get enough kids to play pick-up games through gradeschool. As my kids grew up, all of them could do sports. I would play pickup games with my kids and their friends all the time. Kids would meet at our house, just to play baseball, dodgeball, kickball, etc. Now I coach and parents complain about 3 practices a week, two hour practices, wet grass, hot weather. WHATS the deal?
Luckily though, most of the parents on my team are real good. I've held practices where moms and dads both are in the field helping shag balls, fill in spots if we need players, supplying drinks and helping control the kids in general. June is one of my favorite months. A big challeng awaits for me trying to get everyone playing time, so hopefully I come up with a plan and none of the parents get too bent out of shape with what I decide to do. OH did I happen to mention we are the returning tournament champs from last year!!! The parents really loved winning the tournament after going pretty much winless during the regular season. And hey everyone got to play
