I should not ever go into the Political forums again.

I'm about to go off on a rant here, and it's going to stay as non-partisan as I can keep it.

I should never look into the Political Forums again.I was deeply disturbed by some of what i founf there, and that's saying a lot.  A little background on me - I work in politics.  I actually live right outisde of DC, in Alexandria VA.  I used to work for a memebr of congress from my home state, then I worked for a non-profit advocacy orgnization and then I joined my current consulting company, which is a one stop web shop for political and public affairs campaigns on the web.

I've also got a Masters degree in Political Management, which is basically a hands-on, how-too degree in executing and running political and public affairs campaigns - dealing with the press, working on issues, lobbying, communications strategy, etc.  So, in a nutshell, this means that I've not only studied the process, and am fairly experienced in it, but it means that I've seen some of the high and low points in political history.  Not normal history, like the civil war or the great depression, but political history, like great ads, smear campaigns, dirty politics and clean policy debates.

This has all led me to a unique persepctive on the system and how it works.  it's also left me disgruntled by how it's stopped being about debate, discussion, consensus and the general good, and begun being about winning, smearing, personal attacks and a "my way or the highway attitude".

When I saw the political section start up, i had high hopes.  I thought, hell, we're all gamers, we all have common threads, surely we can keep this civil and not turn this into a partisan flame fest.  Maybe we can atcually reach consensus, discuss issues, and work together.  In the words of Obi Wan - "i was wrong".  After looking int here and seeing some of what i saw from both sides, I have to refer to that section of the site as nothing more than a "wretched hive of scum and villainy".

I was offended by what i saw in there, not from a partisan perspective but a personal one, where I watched middle ground disintegrate and the conspiracy theories ignite.  It's sad that though we honor the leaders that we have seen int he past, the ones who didn't have only personal victory in mind but the desires for a better nation, we slander our opponents and attack them personally, ignoring the lessons of the leaders we so revere.

So in the end, I guess, it just means I should never go into the Political Forums again.

Amen, I am with you on that one. Nothing good can come of it.

Well I guess your two choices are (1) Retreat to the shadows and wring your hands in misery or (2) roll up your sleeves and get in there and shed some light - hopefully being able to lift your voice of reason above the din. I hope your decision is not final.

C'mon man, were you expecting mature adult conversation with mutual respect for each others opinions? That don't even happen on the hill, why would you expext it in a gaming forum. Personally, I'm Libertarian so I hate everyone equally.

I decided to stop going there also. It only aggrivates me, nothing is accomplished, and some of the people there are willing to allow their argument to degenerate into personal attacks instead of objectively discussing the topic. Since none of us are national leaders and will not be making any lasting decisions, I see the forum as irrelevant. I'm glad there are others that see things as I do.

I'm glad the political forum exists so that all that BS no longer contaminates the rest of the site. I'm not against people expressing their political views in the proper medium, but this is a GAMING SITE, not a political or religious one. Please take your religious beliefs and conspiracy theories to those websites and stick to the topic of gaming. Thanks in advance.

I participate somewhat in the political thread. At least, for as long as the thread stays on topic. I think I've actuallly commented on about 4 threads.

MTK, I'll compare poitics to being a teacher. Teachers face parents frequently who think they know better. Parents often think they know it all simply because they once went to school too. Voters often think they know it all because they vote, or watch political ads, or watch Meet the Press, or whatever.

As Bunsen correctly points out, this is a gaming site. The politics thread is therefore full of gamers who have opinions that may or not be political in nature.

However, as has also been correctly pointed out, this is not a porn site, a TV site, or a "help me" site. But, this site serves all of those purposes because we've built a community with interests beyond gaming.

Where you choose to post or not post is your choice. If the politics thread someday goes away, I'll shed no tears. But, until then, I've learned a lot about some of our members, I've learned a lot about what topics push people's buttons, and I've learned a lot about the types of fallacies that circulate out there. I've also found myself gaining a new appreciation for Voltaire:

"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."

If only we all could show that level of respect and commitment to a cherished belief.

I too have vowed to stay away from the Politics forum. It is definately not because I understand how the machine works, quite the contrary. It does amaze me that people can be so adament they are right and have another so adament they are wrong. Do you think these strong opinions have always been around? I think the days of understanding the other side are gone, and that sucks. Would love to hear more about your insight.

I think you're probably right as far as the voracity of the posters in the politics board, I myself included. Try as I might to stay away, I just can't. Not because I feel the need to be right, but I believe there is so much more at stake than in previous administrations. I wont pollute your blog with exactly what you posted you were trying to escape, just sharing my reasons for being such a passionate poster.

I like games too!!

I don't do political threads, I am afraid of what I may turn into. I have to work in an environment that must stay politically neutral especially on the local level. I participate by reading about the issues and voting.

I'm with Zikan on this. Roll up your sleeves and teach people. Hold your temper and moderate. See both sides. People with your level of education (in politics) are few and far between. Try to help them understand what is really important. I honestly think that in the last couple of generations we've been forgetting how to work together. How many people have you met recently who understand that reaching concensus doesn't mean someone loses!
