Hillary for State!

Great quote from Bob Woodward about Secretary Hillary...

Being president is about control, and tell me who ever controlled Bill or Hillary Clinton. They can't control each other. ... I think it's because Warren Buffett and Paul Volcker and others have convinced Obama, 'You're going to have to focus like a laser on the economy. That's issue Number One. And give Hillary and Bill the world.' ... I think people are fantasizing or smoking something if they think Joe Biden's going to call Hillary Clinton up and say, 'This is what we want you to do.'

Games, Games, Games and No Time To Play

As we get to the end of the heavy release period of the calendar, we finally have a chance to breath.  The last month had some of the most anticipated games of 2008 finally land on retail shelves.  Much like this time last year, I am left with quite a few new games and not nearly enough time to play them.  Recently I have picked up Socom: Confrontation, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Gears of War 2, Left 4 Dead and COD World at War.  That is far more than enough to keep me busy.  I am finding it more difficult to join up with the same large regular group of gamers as everyone is off enjoying their own special taste of new release heaven.  Even though all of the new releases that I have picked up involve the same general theme (shooting things with guns) they all do it in a different way that keeps things fresh and prevents manotany from setting in.  Fallout 3 lets me explore and shoot at my own pace.  World at War dictates the fast pace and moves you along by not allowing you to camp out too long in one position.  Left 4 Dead pace goes up and down like a maestro conducting an orchestra.  This is by far the best time of the year to be a gamer.  With the holidays quickly approaching I'm looking forward to a bit more of free time to enjoy saving the world yet again.

And it begins....

From Yahoo news:

Jonathan Martin Jonathan Martin – Thu Nov 20

President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team is asking potential appointees detailed questions about gun ownership, and firearms advocates aren’t happy about it.

The National Rifle Association has denounced the move, which has already led one Republican senator to consider legislation aimed at ensuring a president can’t use an applicant’s gun ownership status to deny employment.

It’s just one question on a lengthy personnel form — No. 59 on a 63-question list — but the furor over the query is a vivid reminder of the intensity of support for Second Amendment rights and signals the scrutiny Obama is likely to receive from the ever-vigilant gun lobby.

Obama’s transition team declined to go into detail on why they included the question, suggesting only that it was done to ensure potential appointees were in line with gun laws.

“The intent of the gun question is to determine legal permitting,” said one transition aide.

But even some Democrats and transition experts are baffled by the inclusion of the question.

Tucked in at the end of the questionnaire and listed under “Miscellaneous,” it reads: “Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.”

Paul Light, professor of public service at New York University, said there was no such question for potential appointees when President George W. Bush took office in 2000.

“It kind of sticks out there like a sore thumb,” Light said.

He expressed uncertainty over why it was included but surmised it was out of an abundance of caution, a desire to avoid the spectacle of a Cabinet-level or other high-ranking appointee who is discovered to have an unregistered handgun at home.

“It’s the kind of thing that, if dug out, could be an embarrassment to the president-elect,” Light said.

Clay Johnson, deputy director of management at the Office of Management and Budget and the head of Bush’s 2000 transition, also didn’t quite understand the purpose of the question.

“It could be their way to say to prospects that they will have to answer all these questions sooner or later, so be prepared,” Johnson observed.

Matt Bennett, a veteran campaign operative who did a stint at Americans for Gun Safety and who now works for the moderate Democratic think tank Third Way, was equally befuddled.

“It strikes me as overly lawyerly,” he said, noting that only a small percentage of guns owned by adults are ever used improperly.

Only half-joking, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) alluded to the shooting accident involving Vice President Dick Cheney, suggesting the query could be a better-safe-than-sorry measure.

“Given the behavior of the vice president under the last administration, you may want to know these things,” Ryan said.

On a more serious note, Ryan suggested that the new president was being “very, very thorough” in his approach.

An Obama ally and pro-gun Democrat from a blue-collar region of Ohio, Ryan dismissed the notion that the inclusion of such a question would do any political harm to the incoming president.

But other gun rights supporters want Obama to know the question has raised their antennae.

“It’s very odd and very concerning to put out a question like that,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), adding that it may also be “unprecedented.”

The freshman senator, who is up for reelection in 2010, had his campaign organization send an e-mail to supporters this week, pledging to enact legislation to bar federal hiring discrimination on the basis of gun ownership.

“Barack Obama promised change, and this is proof positive that we are going to see some of the most liberal change in our nation’s history,” wrote DeMint’s campaign in the e-mail.

DeMint conceded it was unrealistic to try to get a bill on the matter through during the lame duck session this week.

Still, it’s the sort of symbolic issue that may provide a political opening for Republican members of Congress from conservative-leaning states to contrast themselves with the new Democratic administration.

“I want him to know that we’re looking for areas we can work with him but also looking for areas of concern that we want to let him know we’re going to fight on,” DeMint said.

The NRA, the gun-rights group that spent millions to defeat Obama, only to see him easily carry sportsmen-heavy states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania, is signaling that it intends to keep up the fight.

“Barack Obama and his administration are showing their true colors and true philosophy with regard to the Second Amendment,” said Chris Cox, the NRA’s top political official. “It shows what we’ve been saying all along — this guy doesn’t view the Second Amendment as a fundamental constitutional right.”

Cox said the group had put the word out to their members on the question.

Bennett, though, argued that approach would have little resonance.

“The real question is whether he’s doing harm to the broader image of Democrats on guns, and the answer is probably no,” he said. “It may gin up 350,000 hard-core NRA types, but it won’t really bother 65 million other gun owners.”

Hey finance people! Question?

I have a SEP with a little over 5,000 in it. It's time to renew it, or move it. The current rate is 1.99%. I know precious little about investing, but I think 1.99% sucks... I need some direction on what to do with the money.I don't even know the questions to ask. I want reasonably low risk and a rate of return better than what I have now. I just don't trust the bank to have my best interests at heart.

Thanks.

WAW:WTF

Well, I realized that no one on my FL was playing COD4 anymore, so I sucked it up and bought WAW yesterday.  I only have about 2 hours into it, but I'm really on the fence.  It is odd to purchase a new game and feel so familiar with it immediatly.  That is just good sense on Treyarch's part though after the success of 4.

I haven't nailed down my indecision yet.  The maps are ok, with good amounts of cover...unless it is a freaking huge map.  Those seem to be the two map types of the game.  Small and exceptionally large.  Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased that there is a fairly decent map list out of the box.  It can be annoying to find a hedge row that magically stops you, that's probably my fault for not memorizing the maps yet.  At least in 4 there was a table, wall or something in the way that made it obvious that you had found the end.

I tried my hand at some free for all to get rolling last night.  since it uses most of the small maps I found that I would spawn 3 feet away from someone else spawning.  As an experiment, I ran in circles around a truck after I spawned once, only to find that someone else would spawn behind it every 2nd time around.  Nice.  The game also felt much faster paced than COD4.  Again, it could have been the level size....but on more than one map it felt like the crazy, crackhead play of Unreal Tournament.  Spawn, die, spawn die.

Guns seem to be moderately balanced.  As long as you have a sub gun that is.  I haven't messed with the rifles much since the other guns are fully automatic and seem to drop people from most commong map distances.  I will say that the LMGs will probably see a lot of action since they don't run out of ammo within 2 sec.  It does seem like people die more quickly though, which is a good trade off for the tiny magazines.  One minor nusance that I have noticed - The bouncing bettys -  As if the claymores in COD4 were not bad enough, now everybody and their mother is putting these at the top of every staircase, around every corner, around every spawn area.....just freaking wonderful!

The tanks are an interesting touch.  I haven't driven on yet, but they seem easy enough to avoid.   The first few times I saw the tanks I tried to get behind them and pull the guy out and steal it.  Apparently you can't do that....pity.  It would be interesting to have transport vehicles too, similar to Halo.  Maybe in COD7.  I really hope that this game grows on me since I dropped the money for it, but it will likely take some time.   I don't know if it is the dark color palatte, the goofy looking guns or the Duke Nukem looking hand on some of the SMGs buy It just doesn't seem as polished as 4 for some reason.   Maybe I'm wrong though. We'll see.

The Office Quote of the Day

TOBY is BACK!!!!! Here is a couple of Michael's Toby Quotes because of it!!!!!!!!!!

Michael Scott: Today is Toby Flenderson's last day. I couldn't sleep last night. [cuts to clips of Michael dancing around the empty office] I came in extra early, so much energy. There's certain days that you know you will remember for the rest of your life. And I just have a feeling that today is one of those days

. ..............................................

Michael Scott: Toby Flenderson is everything that is wrong with the Paper Industry.

..............................................

Michael Scott: I tried. I tried! I tried to talk to Toby and be his friend... But that is like trying to be friends with an evil... snail. I feel like I'm dying inside. I feel like Neve Campbell in Scream 2. She thinks she can go off to college and be happy... And then, the murderer comes back. Starts killing off all of her friends. Learned a lot of lessons from that movie. This is just one of them.

.............................................

Everyone have a great/ safe weekend!!!

BONUS

I got my work Christmas bonus a week early.......basically they give their employees, a month's pay for every year they work there, on top of your regular week's pay, I have only been employed there for 8 months now, and since I'm such an awsome employee, and have never called in, I got the full months pay......FUCK N A!!!!!  So bills will get caught up, Left 4 Dead will be bought, and Christmas presents for the lady, and children will be taken care of.......yay money.

In other news.......one of my best friends from high school just got out of his 6 year prison term and is in a halfway house rehab place here in town for the next 8 months.  He was a part of the original crew of 6 of us hooligans from our high school.  We all caused trouble, did stuff we shouldn't have, basic male young adult stupidity.  We all had our demons, and our addictions......and Kent was always the one to take everything too far, do to much, and not care for the consequences.  8 years ago he moved to SC for a year, and got all hooked on crack, lost his house, job, and girlfriend......his mother paid me and another of our buddies to go rescue him and bring him home.........only to get hooked on the meth shortly after coming back.  Now the rest of the crew kind of went our own path's, with marrage, jobs, kids....just growing up.  But not Kent, he gets into the wrong crowd, starts making meth, and was in on a grocery store robbery for $70,000.  Shortly before he got caught, we had a falling out,.....I ran into him at a Wal-Mart, and my son, who was maybe 3 at the time was with me, Kent gets into my car, and I could tell he was tweeking his balls off, and he brings out this huge bag of meth, and starts asking me if I want any or if I can get rid of some..........to which I slammed on the brakes (luckily we were in a parking lot) and told him to get the fuck out of my car with that shit, that it was totally uncalled for in front of my son, he starts arguing and I get out and open his door telling him I'm going to drag him out and beat the fuck out of him.......he's 6'9'' tall, and weighed about 240 lbs, I'm 5'9'' about 200 lbs, but I didnt care because he could have been responsable for me not seeeing my child again.  He gets out of the car, I leave, and the next I hear from him is from his mother who told me he got caught with all his drugs by a elememtary school, and the robbery caught up with him.

I talked to him on the phone after he had been in a few months in the local jail, before he got shipped to the state pen........he apologized for his actions, and what not, I just kind of took it as whatever.  He gets shipped off and everyone else moves on with their lives.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago.......I get a call from Kent, and find out he's here, and he's lonely, and bored.  So I call some of the old crew up, and 3 of us agree to go visit him this Sunday, one of our buddies refuses to see him, and I really think he should because he was the one responsable for getting him hooked on the needle, and I really think there needs to be closure there, but whatever.

I've know Kent since we were 13, and while I dont really trust him anymore, I am all for giving him some benifit of the doubt to try to get his shit together, only time will tell, and I will be there for him as much as I can without involving myself or my family in future illegal stupidity.

So wish me luck
