When in trouble keep your head down
Well Saturday the 19 I went to the SoCal lan at Howies. To do this I blew off a wedding that I was invited to. I figured no biggie it was a wedding of my ex girlfriends best friend. Her fiancee now husband hates me for some imagined slight. So I figured no biggie hang with my peeps and eat some carne. Well around 4pm I get a couple of really angry phone calls from the Bride to be and my ex. Why am I not there blah blah blah. Well I decided I better make the reception seeing as how I missed the nuptials. SO after bidding my farewells to the group I drive back down to Hemet for the reception. Hemet is one crappy place in the middle of a desert and meth lab hell. I show up and Veronica my ex is giving me the evil eye so I try to avoid her well that lasts about 15 minutes until she corners me. She lays into me about how could I be so inconsiderate to miss the wedding. I tell I am sorry I did not realize that my presence was that big of a deal seeing as how the only connection I have to it all is her and correct me if I am wrong but we no longer sleep together. Well that went over like a bag of wet noodles. She stormed off while giving me the evil eye still. If y'all don't see me online for awhile call the cops cause I have been cursed. I should have stayed at the Lan and ate some BBQ. It would have been way more fun then getting chewed out by my ex again. Moral of the story don't answer the damn phone when having fun.Posted by Eviluncle @ 6:46 pm EDT | Permalink | 5 Comments

Massenez
While making my mother a cheesecake for mothers day this Saturday I ran out of Kirsch(cherry flavored brandy). I went out to get some more and I have not found one that I really like so I try a new brand every time I run out. Well I picked up a bottle of Massenez Kirsch. It has a nice aroma not overpowering at all. it is a little light in alcohol content at 80 proof but it makes up for it in flavor. You can taste the cherries, fantastic. This is not something I would drink regularly but with a nice slice of cheesecake or some other fruity dessert it will go wonderfully. I do suggest chilling it first. I will try the William Larue Weller wheated whiskey tomorrow at the party so I will more then likely write up my thoughts on that as well. Cheers and Happy Mothers Day to all of the Mothers out there.Posted by Eviluncle @ 7:12 pm EDT | Permalink | 0 Comments

Asombroso
Over the weekend I stopped at my local BevMo to pick up some Wild Turkey. I always spend way to much time perusing the rows of liquor. While in the Tequila section I noticed they got some Asombroso in stock. I have heard a lot of good things about this company so I figured I would pick some up. Well I noticed the price on the Anejo $170.00. Now I don't usually balk at the prices on good liquor but I have never had this one before. While standing there staring at the bottle (behind locked doors of course) one of the sales people walked up to me and asked if I needed anything? Well I confided my dilemma, lo and behold they had an answer for me they just got some 50ml bottles in stock at $24.99 I jumped at the chance. I took my teeny weenie bottle of expensive tequila home and fired up my grill. After grilling up a Ribeye and some peppers I sat down to enjoy my meal with the Asombroso. The flavors were remarkable smooth like no other tequila I have tried and none of the oily aftertaste you get from some brands. After trying this petite bottle it was all I could do not to run out and buy the big one. Well I reined in my enthusiasm and decided to wait a week or two til I have a little more disposable income. I just hope that they still have it when I can talk my self into buying it. Maybe by the time of the Socal lan rolls around I might bring this with me. Something to ponder. http://www.asombrosotequila.com/Posted by Eviluncle @ 6:06 pm EDT | Permalink | 6 Comments

What makes it Bourbon
All Bourbons are whiskey but not all Whiskeys are Bourbon. For it to be Bourbon it has to be made with at least 51 percent corn (most are usually around 70) with the rest made up of rye and wheat and sometimes barley. It also needs to be aged in virgin charred oak barrels for 2 years. Rye whiskey is made with at least 51 percent rye. My personal favorite is Rye. A wheated whiskey has a higher ratio of wheat to it then corn or rye. The most notable of these is William Larue Weller.Unlike bourbon, which is characteristically sweet, smooth and rounded, rye has a dry, jangly, brash nature. Its spicy flavors practically dance their way through the mouth. In its simplest form, rye is a little grassy and sour, much like rye bread. With age, it becomes more complex and subtle, weaving spice and caramel flavors over and through the grassiness. Yet it retains its angularity, never quite losing its edginess. A manhattan, made as originally conceived - with rye instead of bourbon - is a completely different cocktail, dynamic rather than soothing.
MY choices for Rye are
Sazerac 18yr
Rittenhouse 21yr
Thomas H. Handy
and the ol standby Wild Turkey Rye probably because I can find it in most liquor shops.
Bourbon
George T Stagg
Wild Turkey 101
Eagle Rare 17 yr
Woodford
KnobcreekWhiskey
William Larue Weller

Even more whiskey greatness
Well over the weekend I finally opened up a bottle of Thomas H Handy. This is from the Buffalo Trace Antique collection. It is a rye whiskey and if you have ever had the pleasure of trying Sazerac rye you will be overjoyed with this offering. The Sazerac comes in a 18 year and a 6 year the Handy is the six year just uncut and unfiltered at cask strength. It is a little hot at 130 proof but it is a baby once you let it open up a bit. It starts out strong and then wakes your tongue with a very nice spicy and bold taste it will finish smooth with a hint of caramel. If you want to cut it with a bit of ice or water it will tame this for you but it does in my humble opinion give it's best flavor straight up. If you like ryes then by all means give this one a try it runs around 50 bucks a bottle but it is well worth it. Next weekend I will try a limited edition William Larue Weller wheated whiskey I am looking forward to it. An update on the titanium flask I let it sit for 2 weeks with some George T Stagg in it and no difference in taste or smell. I am very pleased with it.Posted by Eviluncle @ 4:21 pm EDT | Permalink | 2 Comments
