Quest Complete!

Like scrounging through a dungeon for that last bit of armor to complete the final set, I have done it... I have completed my 360 media experience by throwing out the old 20" CRT and getting a 19" widescreen LCD montior. If I knew just how much I was missing by playing on that old CRT I would have bitten the bullet alooooonnnngggg time ago and sank the clams to get the LCD.

RainbowSix is a whole 'nother experience now. I can read peoples names in the lobby and I thought the 'Ready' symbol was just a white ball but its really a R6 guy wearing shades... Shadowrun is awesome on it. I thought the sniper rifle just gave you a dot for the reticule, but its actually a small circle which would explain why I was missing so many headshots on the old CRT.

Its just amazing how much detail I was missing out on, I might as well been playing a N64 this whole time I had a 360... I haven't even tried GoW on it yet. Thats going to be awesome!

Best thing yet, I CAN READ ALL THE TINY LETTERING IN THE DASHBOARD ADS!!!

Replacement Therapy

Uggg.... I just quit smoking for the 7th life time total two weeks ago yesterday. Cold turkey, which in and of itself is no big deal for me, however this time I want it to be the last attempt at staying smoke free. So I replaced nicotine with caffine. Uggg....

Now I can't stop drinking coffee. Guess what I was doing last night at 10:30? Drinking coffee. Guess what time I feel asleep? 2am. Guess what time I woke up to go to work? 4:30am. Guess who decided to take a sick day?

Now I need to replace caffine with something else in the meantime, just long enough to disconnect caffine and nicotine. I will never quit the caffine altogether. Coffee is the nectar of the gods. But what do I replace it with? Sex? Bwahahahahahahahahahahhaahahaha!!!! Thats not happening. Food? I eat all the time anyways. Gambling? Don't have the cash, but then again what hardcore gambling addict has cash (I like my fingers too much!)? Can't be XBOX, because I connect XBOX with coffee. Damn!

Guess I'm stuck with coffee. I'll catch up on sleep when I'm dead....

Oh and Shadowrun rocks!!!

Ummmm.... Freedom of Speech?

OK, I heard this news bit this morning before taking off for work and I thought it was absolutly absurd. Some 16 year-old girl was upset with the repeated scheduling 'snags' for some school event. She then did what most people this day and age do when something pisses them off and they feel the need to vent: she bloged her rage. With in that blog she calls an unnamed school official a "douche-bag" (ala Profanity nonetheless). So somehow the Principal sees the blog, bans her from running for class secretary next year (a position she has held for her entire time in High School), 'asks' her to tell her mom about the comment and to apologize to 'unnamed official'.

It's not stated wether or not she used the officials name in the blog, but thats not the point, (there's not much difference in 'Principal Skinner is a dick' and 'my Principal is a dick'. It just takes a little more work to figure out who the principal is) the point is that she has every right to say what ever she wants in her PERSONAL blog. It's not like this was an unmerrited attack either, the teen had reason to call 'unnamed official' a douche-bag.

Also, what I'm wondering is how school officials got wind of this blog. I know most of internet is public domain (barring password protected sites and yada yada) but either they got tipped off or some official is a little pervy and snooping on students.

So the girl buckles, appologizes, and takes down the blog post. She had this to say, "It was an unsavory term and I shouldn't have said it. It was a rude comment. It was written thinking that it would be private and it didn't occur to me that it's on the Internet, it's public..." Well no shit the internet is public! She also said, "I mean I've really learned my lesson. You can't present yourself in that way..."

Big mistake, never apologize for anything like that! If she would have stood up for her first amendment right and not admit fault or wrong doing, she might have a leg to stand on when I comes to running for secretary again. Since she took the bullet (probally thinking that if she did they would reconsider the punishment) she is screwed because for most officials there is no grey area in between right and wrong.

Seriously, grow some skin. Its a teen being upset over something petty, thats nothing new. Feel privledged that she only called you a douche-bag! There is a lot worse trash a teen can call some one!

Bah, maybe I'm looking too hard into this, but if it was my daughter I would tell her to keep it up and don't apologize because you have the right to speak your mind in your own blog even if the public can read it. Douche-bags!

Top 10 Games I Never Finished

I've been gaming since I was 8, so thats 20 years of dedicated gaming. Along the way I've come across some big games that I just never finished. Wether the game was too difficult or just too time consuming I've just never finished it. Here are my top 10 games that I never finished, but wish I had (or could).

10. Oblivion (360)

I have spent 60+ hours traveling the landscape of Cyrodiil and I have gotten pretty far in the main quest line. However, I made the mistake of starting a second character before finishing the first and the second character sucks, so I don't want to play anymore. I still have Oblivion and visit it from time to time chipping away at that main quest line, but the drive and enjoyment isn't there anymore.

9. Dragon Warrior III (NES)

Oh man, back when I first got this game (1991) it was friggin' huge! Being a fan since the first Dragon Warrior, I poured hours and hours into it and tried with all my might. However, thanks to running from monsters early in the game, I'd get pwnd by all the late game monsters and just couldn't hang. I hung up the sword when Dragon Warrior IV hit the shelves (I destroyed DW IV though!).

8. Syphon Filter (PS)

I got my PS right after the release of Metal Gear: Solid. My friend and I destroyed it over a three day weekend, seeing more of the continue screen then we would like. I remember picking up Syphon Filter shortly after because it was being touted as a high-octane Metal Gear type game. While the begining to mid levels are fun and well paced, the last few levels are a bitch! Warehouse 76 gave me nightmares for weeks. I held on to Syphon Filter for the 3 years I had my PS and played it every now and then but I just couldn't get past the friggin Silo Tunnels...

7. FF VIII (PS)

I have completed every Final Fantasty released in the US with the exception of the MMOs and FF VIII. Oh my god was I ever pissed at this game. Since the original I have been a huge fan of Final Fantasy. I consider FF VIII to be the steaming pile of the series. The game was so bad in my opinion that I barely got past the first 2 hours of gameplay, then the car came in and i said 'eF this!!!'. I had to drag out the SNES and purge myself with a new game of FF II... Oh and the 'Gunblade' can go screw!

6. Commando (NES)

This only makes the list because it is the very first game that I ever owned. I even had it before I got the console (6 months later... Thanks dad!!!!) Commando was just a mean game. Even with all the power ups and unlimited grenades I could only make it past a few levels. I ritualisticaly burned it when my first NES bit the dust.

5. Cobra Command (NES)

Another mean game and it wasn't even that great of a game. I wasted too much of my childhood trying to beat this game. Its friggin' impossible! Homing missles, bullets flying everywhere, flying underground its just too much at once. That and you have to rescue all the POWs. The control response on the chopper is what doomed me the most, a slight mistap on the controller and I would slam into the roof of the cave... And flying into a battleship?!?! FTW?!?!?

4. Secret of Mana (SNES)

Awesome game, I love it. But damn does it get hard when you get towards the end!!! My problem with it when I first got to play it was I could only rent it 3 days at a time. So what usually happened was I would rent it then someone else would get it after me and wipe/screw up my save. When I did get it consecutively I couldn't get past the Pure Land no matter how high my levels were. I played it again last year on emulation (I got the cart in a bargain bin back in the PS days shortly before my SNES bit it, still got the cart though) and again made it all the way to the Pure Land, but this time my HDD crashed and everything was lost... Damn!

3. Blaster Master (NES)

This is the game that never ends. It just goes on and on my friends! Screw that damn Crab!!! I think I only beat that bastard twice and after I did I would die by some stupid vehicle world monster by mistake. Sunsoft games are the pits, but some how I got into some testing program with them (dad?) and they would send me free copies of their games(along with a survey) weeks before their public release. Batman, Fester's Quest, Freedom Force, and of course Blaster Master. I wonder what they thought when they got a letter from a ten year old telling them that all their games suck...

2. Castlevania (NES)

Damn this list has a ton of NES games on it... Drac was a worthy adversary and I believe that Castlevania got me started on the whole controller tossing habit. After beating Drac in his first form, only to be greeted with his second form, I tossed the controller clear across the room (you should see my old Xbox controller from all the Halo 2 matches). Getting to Drac is hard enough, but that second form is just too much to overcome. I gave up because it was too hard and frustrating getting that far just to get my ass kicked...

1. Einhander (PS)

My white whale.... What an awesome game. This game is easily in my top three favorites of all times. I never minded the challenge of the game and I would play it to death at times. I just wasn't skillful enough to get past the later levels, but man I wish I could have gone to the end, just to say that I did. I mean isn't that why most of us beat games? Just to say that we did it? This game would be phenominal on XBLA.

First Grill of the Season...

Fuck yeah! I officially killed winter this Saturday as I busted out my $30 Wal-Mart charcoal burning grill to sear some thick T-bones.

Not exactly sure of the science behind it, but man does meat taste a thousand times better when its cooked outdoors over an ashen pile of coals. This is where my faith lies. I give homage to the grill gods as they may bless me with a juicy and tender feast. The oven broiler is my hell, Kingsford is my heaven.

The ritual begins early with a can of Guinness poured into a gallon size plastic bag. Then fresh ground pepper (the chunkier the better), fresh chopped garlic (again the chunkier the better), and crushed sea salt are added to the bag. Shot of Jameson Irish Wiskey is optional, but highly recommended. Throw the beef in the bag, seal tight with as little air as possible and then massage the concoction into the meat. Let sit in the fridge for at least 6 hours.

Two bags of Kingsford are required for the official slaying of winter. My wife thinks I'm nuts for "wasting" all that black gold, but its essential to appease the grill gods as winter is a difficult beast to slay. Carefully assemble the briquettes into a tall pyramid, let some boy scout juice (lighter fluid) soak in... Wooosh!!! The taller the flame the happier the gods shall be!!!

The gods smiled on me and blessed me with a juicy, tender bounty! This is my man-religion!

FTW Is Wrong With People These Days?!?!

Well, as I was looking for confrimation as to what that weird red orbital icon that appeared right next to the health bar during a Co-Op game of Crackdown was for, I stumbled on a couple other posts of interest. One was titled: "HL3 Wont DL?!" (I'll give you a link at the end).

I thought to myself, "This will be amusing..." Idiot posters draw me in like a train wreck. I just can't stay away. So, I opened it to see how many times people made the "There is no Half-Life 3 n00b" joke or the "How could you miss the BIG, Silver card that came in the case" comment. Suprisingly most people were helpful and only a couple made the joke and comment I just listed, but in some vain attempt to save his e-reputation he retaliated with this comment:

My goodness, some one wasn't paying attention in Kindergarten. My little girl is learning the seasons in Kindergarten now, thats how I know that this is Kindergarten material.

The Headaches of On-Line Rentals

Ever sign up for something and get more than you bargained for? Well personally, I have on more than a dozen occasions. My most recent folly involved the on-line game rental services.

Like most people I thought, "What a great idea! This is going to be easy and well worth the monthly fee..." What I never took into consideration is the possiblility of errors. My grandpa always told me: "The more working parts something has, the more prone it is to break" Without getting into specifics, lets take into consideration how many parts there are to an on-line game rental service: the website, distrubution, the Postal Service, and to a small part Customer Service. That's a whole lot thats out of your control.

What can go wrong? I took a poll earlier this week and asked for on-line rental headaches that happend to any 2old2play members. These are the questions I asked:

Game Lost In Mail When Returning to Service Provider: 27% This acctually was my problem and my motivation behind this article. Not only does this clog your steady flow of new games it also brings up customer service issues. Some service providers will write off the game once you report the loss and a period of time passes (usually two weeks). Others may have you go to the USPS to resolve the issue. Since missing mail must be reported by the sender this is one headache that I'm sure none of us would like to deal with. Hard part is, this happens, and if you plan on using any on-line game rental for an extended length of time this issue is bound to happen.
Game Never Reached Me: 0% No one complained of this issue. Makes me wonder how come so many get lost on the way back...
Game Took 2 Weeks Or More to Reach Service Provider: 9% Generally, when this happens the game is 'lost' in the distribution facility. If you think about it, any sizable service provider has a customer base in the thousands. On some days its possible for hundreds of games to arrive. They are bound to drop the ball on some of them and misplace them in the shuffle. Most times, when you report the game missing they will match it in the distribution facility. Choosing a service that also rents movies only compounds this problem.
Game Took 2 Weeks Or More to Reach Me: 9% Days off for the Postal Service, slow distribution facilities, and distribution facilites that are clear across the country. Make sure that when you do sign up for a service that you look into the locations of their distribution facilities. Many services post it on their site. Find a service that has one close to you.
Got A Game That Was Not On My List: 0% Thats a good sign.
I Have A Hard Time Getting Newer Releases That Are On My List 45% This was the biggest problem. With the rising cost of games many people are looking to these services to get some of the games that they want to play, but may not necessarily want to keep. The demand for new games versus old is lopsided making it hard to fill requests for new games but real easy to fill requests for old games. This means that if you have a queue of 10 games with the newer games on top priority and older games on low priority you're more likely to get that older game regardless. Its unfeasible for the service provider to get a copy of a new game for every customer that has it on their queue, so they get a percent of that demand and try to spread it out thin. If you have a large queue expect to get the old over the new.
I Received A Damaged Game: 0% While the poll showed zero, many people posted a complaint of receiving a faulty disk. Short of a tour, its impossible to say what happens when returned games arrive at the distribution facility. This problem has been around since the dawn of video rental stores. I can remember renting dozens of broken VHS cassetts and scratched DVDs over the years. There is no cheap solution for this problem and the service providers will continue to rely on us to report damaged games.
Billing/Cancellation Issue: 9% A member of 2old2play posted that it took three months to get his account cancelled. Sad to say, there is no easy button in your customer profile on the site. Most service providers make you phone in cancellations and it usually makes for a very awkward conversation with the customer service representative. Saying "Your service sucks!" usually opens a whole scripted can of worms and makes it a big head ache. Best tell them that your system is kaput and you will not be replacing it.

What would a bunch of cons be with out pros? No punchline here. Rather than driving to the rental store only to find that they don't have what you want you can instead browse on-line and let some one else pick the game off the rack. You get more games for your buck in the long run. There is no embarasment when you need to rent Barbie: Horse Adventures for your daughter. Larger selection: most of these service providers deal in games only and that means more to choose from.

Here are some quick tips for choosing a service provider:

Find one that has a distribution facility that is close to you.
Browse the site before you sign up and look for ease of website use and game choices (make sure they have what you are looking for).
Keep your queue small. This will make you more likely to get what you really want by reducing the choices the service provider has.
When you send a game back check your queue often to see if it arrived. If it has been more than seven business days since you sent and they show it out, report it missing.
If you want just games stick to a service provider that only rents games. However, if you do pick a service that offers games and DVDs prepare to get more movies than games

Remeber: Stuff happens and there are few guarranties in life. Its up to you to look out for numero uno. Happy gaming!

Wow. . . . . . .

I got a 360 last night. I am very impressed, immersed, and wowed. Now if I only had Market Place points!

All I need to do is get a new headset (the one outta the box gives my friends an echo on their end and the thing is total crap to begin with) and relax because I'm treating like a million dollar vase. Can't really let it go red circle or brick on me, so I'm holding my breath everytime I use it....

Anyone know of a good, economy headset?

Halo 3 Commercial/Trailer/Teaser/Preview Thingy Breakdown!

Tomato potato.... Break it down!!! (<---- insert ub3r Hardcore breakdown!)

Author's note: I'd like to think I know it all, but the more I think I know the less I truely do know...

OK first things first! If you just woke up from a coma or have been trapped under 6 feet of snow for the last week GO HERE and watch the video, or you will be lost when reading this editorial!!!

The Halo 3 TV spot aired this monday in the middle of Monday Night Football as the Eagles take on the Panthers (<---- best Al Michaels voice). I missed watching the spot because I was too busy pwning nubs on Halo 2! That and I don' t have cable TV. I did, however, watch it that night on my PC. I was blown away. It was purrdy and chock-full of goodness that my eyes have not seen yet. I watched it ten times in a row.

Some say that the 60 second spot was too short and that there was not enough going on... Yada yada yada.... But it was crammed with goodness and I am going to share what I saw and address some of the internet specualtions and rumors that have been floating around.

Starlight, Starbright, First S-Class Cruiser I See Tonight...

Lets start with the first 18 seconds: the kids. The Chief is out cold and having a flash back of his carefree pre-Spartan days. This gives us a deeper grasp on the rich story of Halo. It lets us know that the Master Chief is a lot more than a mean, green, Covenant killing machine. He has memories and a tangible past. To those of us that love the Campagin and the story thus far it has us clamoring for more and wondering what is the story behind the Helmet...

A lot of fans have been saying that the Helmet is a clue that Master Chief is going to be able to run around helmetless and/or have chunks of his armor fall off as he takes battle damage. Granted that would be cool for an action figure, but its very impractical for Halo. The hardcore fans already know that the helmet is removable. It came off at the end of Halo: CE and was off at the start of Halo 2. Master Chief is, afterall, a human. The less intense gamer may not know that, and may think that the Master Chief is an android. Having the helmet off just shows the world that the Chief is a person.

"Chief... Leave me..." Says a very faint female voice... I don't want to say its Cortana, but if it is, the Chief is remembering what she said. The voice is too clear to be real time Cortana. Sgt. Johnson asks for any sign of the Chief. How did he get there from Delta Halo? Heck, how did he get to Earth from the first Halo? If you read the books you know!

Saddle Up!!!

Well if you've seen the magazine screen shots released in November you already know that we will be able to see where the Master Chief keeps his secondary weapon and what he is stowing. Check out that funky cloud in the distance while you are at it...

Its not a Grenade!!!

Seriously, its not!!! One of the most obvious things in the whole TV spot was the 'Dome Shield'. Don't be duped into calling it a Shield Grenade because its not a grenade! I admit, I made this mistake at first, but grenades blow stuff up, or emit smoke or gas. They don't save your ass from tank rounds...

Is this 'Dome Shield' going to be the funciton of the X Button? Will it be Sprint? Prone? Shield Boost? Only bungie knows for sure, but wait... Whats lying there in the background? The Mongoose!

Yes, the hardcore gamer knows about the Mongoose and how it got scrapped in Halo 2 pre-builds, but Joe Basic doesn't. Was the Chief driving this into the fray before he got knocked out? We will find out soon enough...

Holy Pistol Whip Batman!!!

This is for more of the Hardcore fan. Its the Halo: CE M6D (possibly). As much joy as it brings to my heart to see the bump on the tip where the scope is, I don't think its going to be the same M6D the Halo: CE fans have come to worship. I belive bungie put a little visual metaphor in for us to decipher. Chief holsters the AR after he picks it up then pulls out the Pistol. Halo: CE: Pistol > AR. Then, when he is sprinting towards the baddies, he holsters the Pistol and pulls out the AR. Halo 3: AR > Pistol. Take it as you like, but if the M6D is coming back, get ready to be disappointed. No way is Bungie going to bring back the sniper accurate Three Shot Kill...

The Hundred Yard Dash

We all saw the Chief run. Does it mean anything or is it just for some eye candy? In the first two games, the Chief was hardly ever in a hurry (except after 'Assault on the Control Room' and before the Temple on Delta Halo got annihilated) and to see him full on sprint has to mean something. Those of us that don't think the X Button will be used to activate the 'Dome Shield' belive that its going to make the Master Chief run his ass off. It could work. Bungie would probally take out the lunge, making you do a XB combo in order to get the umph in for a stronger beat down. They will also probally not let you shoot or throw grenades while sprinting. And since most of us will have to take our thumb off the right stick to press X, it only means that we can go straight and strafe. For that last reason is why I belive that X will not equal sprint.

E Tu Brutes!!!

Yep, Frankie said they're Brutes! Complete with their own version of the Wraith equipped with KC Floodlights! I have a sinking feeling that we are not going to be facing too many Elites as the Campaign unfolds. Thats a lot of brutes and if they are as tough as they were in Halo 2, I don't envy the Chief one bit right now...

Maybe we will get to swing that nifty hammer around after we stomp some Brute Skulls. It would be a good replacement for the sword; slower with no lunge but good striking distance and capable of taking out everyone in front of you. I doubt it, though but I read it about it from IGN and thought it deserved some mention.

I also think that we have yet to see the function of the X Button if in fact the 'Dome Shield' is activated through the same button as the normal combat grenades. The hype machine is in full gear and is only going to offer us more eye-candy as time drags on. Halo 3 can't come soon enough for me!!!

Back in the swing...

...of things.

Ya proally didn't notice, but I took a week off from the site and Halo. It was the longest I ever went with out playing Halo since Halo 2 came out.

I'm finally out of my rut, thinking outside the box, and doing better overall. Which is where I was trying to be at before the break and not achieving that made me terribly frustrated.

Union Strike!!!

Well, I like to think of VF as the Timex of 2o2p: We take an [ass kicking] and keep on ticking.

Thats what the Teamsters did to us last night. They cleaned house in all three games and gave us one of our worst losses in a slayer game ever. However, we didn't walk away sore, we walked away with some knowledge and with more cohesion for our alts. as Beholder and RedSooner were off tonight.

I capped the games and now I wish I hadn't. Mainly because I played like a retarded sea-monkey with no thumbs. I've got one uploaded now and the other two will follow later in the day as I get them up over a 30KB/s rate (hey its free :roll eyes: )

They moved through that map like they could walk through walls. They were always flanking us and getting behind us. We tryed to use too much attrition and we didn't push the flag as hard as we needed to. Part of the reason is we didn't know where they were and they always saw us first. We never got the drop on them.

I did get a couple of ideas to try out with the team and now realize that we grossly over looked the ring in our practice. Pay no mind to my grenades, lol, I know I threw way too many bad ones that game.

As if I didn't get my ass kicked hard enough on this map already, its back to Midship. Uhg... They beat us like, I don't know, some thing you beat really hard and mercilessly... R3d worked Pink 3 like no one I ever saw. They had us spawing in Carbine for a good part of the game.

As a team, we get kinda lost in TS on this map. We're working on a couple of different things, but have yet to come up with something that is effective.... And I need to work on my Pink 3 jumps...

We got flat out creamed! I think that was worse than the beating Alpha gave us in the VF Pro debut. 4:30 total game length, at least it was over quick

GRAH!!!! I hate the green room!!! Its a slayers paradise and they slay a whole bunch better than us! They put a whole mess of time on the clock when they held it in the green room. Soon as we pushed them out, we had a little easier time. I told my team on practice on Monday that they probally won't go to the green room, man I was wrong!

The score looks better than it actually was. At one point the score was 4:30 to :40, but we finally buckled down and tried some other methods of attack and were able to throw an extra minute and change onto our score. If only we could have done it earlier in the game we might have given them a run for their money on this game.

5:00 - 1:52 Teamsters

Well, during this match I've come to realize that I'm making the same mistakes and poor judgment calls over and over and over again. I'm becoming too jumpy and jerky and feel like I'm regressing as a player. I try too hard to make the big amazing play, instead of just being consistant. I don't know how to overcome this as my situational awarness goes to nil in a game because I get wrapped up in the action. Maybe I'm at a good level, but because I got into 2o2p and MLG gametypes late, I feel like I'm lacking?

I spent the better part of the first year and a half Halo 2 has been out lost in the muck of MatchMaking with maybe 4 people on my friends list, picking up what I could from watching the other guys kill me. Then I found 2o2p and VF and have been vaulted into a whole new world. Maybe its me trying to compensate too fast, or maybe I'm just at my peak... But I feel like I have stopped moving forward. I'll continue to push, I have the drive but maybe not the know-how...
