Bring Down The Sky

If you're a Mass Effect fan and you haven't purchased the "Bring Down the Sky" DLC on XBox Live, I encourage you to do so. It's a nice little side mission and a great addition to the game.

I'm playing through again as a female redheaded Renegade soldier, and the big moral choice in the mission is actually a fairly tough choice.

Just Saved the Galaxy

I finished "Mass Effect" last night. What a great game. I realize I'm probably in the minority here, but the gameplay really struck a nice balance between shoot 'em up and advancing the narrative. I like the voice work, too.

I was sadly disappointed to find that I couldn't string both love interests along indefinitely. A game that will let you shoot someone in the face to avoid bringing them back for trial ought to let you make time with two beautiful women. Guess you don't get 'Renegade' points for being a heel.

After 50+ hours of gameplay, I know my wife will be happy I'm done. Unfortunately, I'm already contemplating how the story would evolve if I chose another class, or made different choices throughout the game. I could always play as a hot babe myself....hmmm......

Okami

Okay, I admit I've been a little scarce lately. Most of the blame for this can be laid at the feet of this lovely lady:

Meet Ōkami Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun, and the main character in the game "Okami", now available for the Wii.

Okami is an absolutely beautiful game, with the aesthetic of a Japanese print. Even better, the play value is topnotch. Originally developed for the PS2, Ōkami was one of those games that received critical acclaim, but didn't sell well. The game has now been ported to the Wii, and the Wii version may well jumpstart Okami's popularity, because the gameplay in this title is absolutely tailor-made for the Wiimote. Specifically, much of the action centers around the use of the "Celestial Brush", with which Amaterasu changes the world (goddess, remember?). Different brush strokes create different effects, from a power slash, to a gust of wind, to high explosives. Using the Wiimote to "paint" with the brush is absolutely intuitive, to the extent that I can't imagine trying to play Okami with a conventional controller.

You might be forgiven if you think you've seen this game before. With the main characters being a wolf and her sarcastic sidekick/guide, comparisons to Link/Midna from Twilight Princess are inevitable. There are also ocean sequences later in the game that are eerily reminiscent of Wind Waker. But Okami has a greater depth of story AND better gameplay than either of those Zelda titles. I'm about 38 hours into it, and don't want to put it down to sleep. The pacing is so smooth, with each sequence leading quickly to the next, that there are virtually no obvious stopping points. And with the huge world of the game, and the many sidequests, there is a lot to do.

I picked this game up new for $20. I would easily pay 2 1/2 times that for such an enjoyable gaming experience. Your mileage may vary, of course, but for this price, why not pick it up and try it?

Variety is the Spice of Life

I finally finished Rainbow Six Vegas 2. I enjoyed it much more than I would have predicted before picking up Vegas 1. With that said, I still pretty much suck at T-hunts, but I hope to work my way through them, eventually.

As I took a breather after R6V2, I realized that between the Rainbow 6 franchise and Call of Duty 4, I haven't played much of anything else lately. Right now, everyone and their dog is playing GTAIV, which I won't be getting (you can see a post on GTA IV on my main blog), so I have an opportunity to play around a bit.

I bought Mario Kart Wii for my son's birthday, and while I was in the store, I picked up "Okami" for the Wii for myself. It looks beautiful, and will make a nice contrast to all the guns and mayhem I've been enjoying lately.

Then my son talked me into renting games at Blockbuster. He picked "Burnout Revenge", and I snagged "Medal of Honor: Airborne". Yes, it's another shooter, but I was so impressed with the performance that "MOH: Vanguard" managed to squeeze out of the underperforming Wii system that I wanted to give it a try. It's a good game, and I'm enjoying it. And dying. A lot.
