Keep it secret?
I normally don't try to talk about deep personal stuff on blogs, but this is just mainly a question that can start a topic.
For those out there who are in the IT field, that is computer repair or anything remotely realted to that, do you regret ever telling people that you fix computers?
I live in a small town. We are by no means simple country folk though. We have our fair share of technological knowledge in the county. But, because I work in such a public form (for a school system), it seems that I get bombarded with constant requests for computer help. Simple things, complex things, questions that I honestly don't have time for. I hate to sound like some kind of egotistical jerk by saying that, but the bottom line is I don't. I try my best to be helpful, because I always assume that if I'm not able to help them, they'll go to Geek Squad or Firedog, which is something I don't want to see them do. They're overpriced and they've been caught stealing people's personal items off their computers. But these days, I just don't want to do them anymore. But it still nags at me when someone asks for help.
So let me pose the question to you, do you tell people you fix computers? And if you do, and they bombard you with questions and problems and just constant crap....how do you politely refuse to help?
Please, discuss.
