Enjoy the coming festivities.

Holidays are coming up and I guess people are somewhat on edge. Coming home from work the turn I usually make was backed up with traffic so I went down the road apiece (love those Mid Westerners) and would just drive back from a light down. Apparently some wack job was mad I wasn't going 75 mph so he decides to cut me off. Next exit there is this moron waiting to make a turn and I pull up next to him and mention something about his ancestry. He didn't take to kindly to this, jumps out of his car just as an SUV takes his door off trying to go around us at a stop sign. No injury to cretin, but his complection did change to a pasty hue.

Terms of Service Were Changed Without Notice, Microsoft Rep Says

What is wrong at Microsoft that they keep hiring people who are not only untrained, but who also will be adamant in stuff they make up rather than actually referring the issue to the proper person? And to be clear, the latest jerk was an American in America, so it was not a case of subcontracted outsourcing.

After spending another 2 hours on the phone with Xbox customer support today, my 2 week old issue is still not resolved and I wasted another afternoon talking to an insulting, condescending support agent who lied to me and then hung up on me. What's worse is that this particular agent, George, is a supervisor.

When I said that the problem wasn't with DRM transfer but rather with accessing content on another console while signed in to LIVE, he said I'd have to do the DRM transfer. When I said that I'm supposed to be able to access it as a "Roaming Xbox 360 Account," he said, "Says who?"

When I said, "Microsoft says so in section 13c of the Microsoft Terms of Use," he said that no, it doesn't. When I said yes it does, I'm looking at it right now, he said that things change, and the Terms of Use had changed to exclude this feature, and I need to learn to deal with it.

He then tried to change the subject away from my issue (and away from the facts) and onto his supposedly hurt feelings at being "disrespected" by being told he was incorrect.

He said that even though the website and every other agent says that the DRM transfer tool can only be used once every 12 months, I could use it twice. When asked for some sort of reference number or code to be able to use the service more often, or to refer me to the documentation that said this was true, he could not.

When pressed, he said that due to the NXE update, not every copy of the Terms of Service had been updated. I told him that I have the NXE update, I'm signed in to LIVE right now, and I'm reading it off the screen, and it's also up on xbox.com. When I said that it would be a violation of the law to change the Terms of Use without informing people, he then took something I said and reformed it to say that the game in question is no longer available and that he's sorry, but that's the way things are.

I told him I'm signed into Marketplace right now and I'm looking at the game and it's still available. He said he needed to put me on hold to confirm my information. "Confirm what information?" I asked him, knowing full-well that he was trying to give me the brush-off. "Confirm Microsoft's polices," he said. Then he put me on hold for a few seconds and then hung up on me.

He, like the jerk a couple of weeks ago, refused to "escalate" my issue and would not let me speak to another representative. He kept calling me things like "dude" despite my repeated requests that he not. The more baseless the claim he was making, the more informal his tone became.

All this, and I still can't play Shogi. This makes over 5 hours on the phone with no results other than frustration. I have had to repeatedly explain my issue to 7 different agents so far, and each time I am starting fresh even though the previous agents have made the keyboard sounds of entering notes.

What's the point of customer support if you already need to know more than the support agents before you call to avoid being conned by them? How many times can I be told that every other agent was wrong, but this one is right? A casual gamer, such as the kind that LIVE Arcade caters to, does not have the time or interest to deal with bullshit like this. How many service requests about bad service can you enter before giving up, especially when your more likely than not to need a new complaint about the service when you register each complaint?

The Office Quote of the Day

Michael Scott: Here's what we brought. We brought uniforms from the warehouse. I brought Silly String, Dwight brought gasoline and chunks of rubber to make stink bombs.

Dwight Schrute: Or real bombs.

Michael Scott: No, no. Not real bombs.

Dwight Schrute: Yeah come on it would be so badass.

Michael Scott: Mmm maybe. I donno. I donno. Would be badass.

Jim Halpert: No.

Dwight Schrute: Yeah! It will.

Jim Halpert: Absolutely we're not doing this.

A quote from Mony Python and the Quest for hte Holy Grail

Minstrel: [singing] Brave Sir Robin ran away...

Sir Robin: *No!*

Minstrel: [singing] bravely ran away away...

Sir Robin: *I didn't!*

Minstrel: [singing] When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled.

Sir Robin: *I never did!*

Minstrel: [singing] Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about, and valiantly, he chickened out.

Sir Robin: *Oh, you liars!*

Minstrel: [singing] Bravely taking to his feet, he beat a very brave retreat. A brave retreat by brave Sir Robin.

Different Christmas Poem

I am not great with words  so when I see these I try and let everyone see them

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the

room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my

chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell,

a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that

was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,

Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment,

or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near, But I opened my eyes

when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,

Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a

tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who

 was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure

stood, his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty

years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the

dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and

 my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear, "Come in this moment,

it's freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your

sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!" For barely a

moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in

 drifts…

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light Then he sighed and

he said, "Its really all right, I'm out here by choice. I'm here every

 night.

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separates you

 from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore me, I'm proud to stand here like

my fathers before me. My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"

Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers." My dad

stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam', And now it is my turn and so,

 here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me

pictures, he's sure got her smile."

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and

blue... an American flag. "I can live through the cold and the being

alone, Away from my family, my house and my home.

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in

a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing

another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.. Who stand at

the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag

 will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright, Your family is

waiting and I'll be all right." "But isn't there something I can do,

at the least, "Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast? It

seems all too little for all that you've done, For being away from

 your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, "Just tell us you

love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while

we're gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we

come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and

we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we

mattered to you as you mattered to us." PLEASE, would you do me the

kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas

will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S service men and

women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in

this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and

think of our heroes, living and dead, who

 sacrificed themselves for us.

Australia!

My wife and I just got back from a two week vacation in Australia.  We recently decided to start a family and decided this would be our last chance to have a real vacation.  Wow, it was awesome.  On Friday, Nov 14 I got to work at 6:45am and worked until around 2:00 when I took off to pick up my wife.  Something like 30 hours later (layover in LA), we arrived in Brisbane, AU... on Sunday morning.  Actually, I don't remember the exact timeline, but Australia is 15 hrs ahead of the Eastern time zone, that sure does screw with your system.  Anyway, our flight to AU was part of a package that included flights to Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, and Sydney.  We were going to pack as much in as possible!

Notice, they're all coastal cities.  We opted to not go to the outback desert because of the way our plans and timetable worked out.  I had actually already seen the outback and, while I wish I could have shown it to my wife, I think we made the right choice.

So, first up was Brisbane.  It's a great city with lots of parks and a river running through it.  We took a road trip to see the Australia Zoo, home of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's family.  The zoo was great.  It had a very open feel that allowed kangaroo interaction, koala petting, and elephant feeding.  It was all structured and overseen, but in some cases, there was only a small fence and an illustrated sign to keep visitors in line.

Our next little road trip from Brisbane was south to Surfer's Paradise on the Australian gold coast.  Beautiful beaches line the AU east coast.  This was a lazy day of playing in the water and laying on the beach.  Good times...

Next, we headed to Cairns (pronouced "Cans").  We took a boat tour to do some snorkling on the great barrier reef.  It was a crappy day and wind was kicking up sand so the pictures aren't too clear, but there really is as much wilflife out there as I had seen in pictures before.  Fish, sea turtles and all sorts of creatures were in abundance.

Cairns is on the edge of a rainforest, much in contrast with the desert that AU is famous for.  The best part of that excursion was a Sky Rail ride that took us over the tree tops of the forest.  The views were spectacular once again.

With our trip half over, we headed to Melbourne and rented a car to drive west along AU's Great Ocean Road.  This was probably my favorite part of the trip.  Driving a tiny little Yaris, we weaved through the tight turns and post card views for a full day.  Signs like the one below were frequent reminders for us American tourists.

The city of Melbourne was one of the best I've ever been too.  The city has unofficial sections like Chinatown and Little Italy.  They're in the process of revamping their harbor area with shops and restaurants.  It's already nice and it'll be great when it's done.  There's a free tourist trolley in the heart of the city and other trains and such aren't expensive so a car is more trouble than it's worth.  People were out enjoying the air all over the place, not just tourists, so the city had a great feel to it.

Finally, we made it to the city AU is most famous for: Sydney.  There's a ton to do and see.  The shops and bars were the coolest, I've ever seen. The pic below was of a restaurant area just a few blocks from our hotel.

Of course, I have more pics but I need to filter out the ones of my pregnant wife.  She's really not interested in showing her current form on the internet.  Speaking of the wife, she did a great job planning this trip.  All of our rooms were in excellent locations and had very reasonable rates.  We had the time of our lives, while coming in under budget.

It was a great time, but to be honest, I'm glad to be back.  Glad to have my own bed back, glad to have my dogs to play with, and glad to get back online with my 2o2p family.
