"Switch" Indeed
Okay, for the time being, let's put aside the software incompatibility issues of Apple software with itself. I just got my MacBook back from the Apple Store yesterday. They had to replace the logic board and all the RAM on it. This is after replacing the hard disk and optical drive. Basically, everything inside the computer has failed since I bought it new from them in mid January, and they already had to replace an entire machine when the optical drive was bad. That's not even the bad part.
I've been using Apple's much touted, built-in "Time Machine" backup software. It has mixed up the date of receipt, subject line, sender, and message body for EIGHT FUCKING YEARS WORTH OF E-MAIL MESSAGES. I figured I'd just try restoring it again from the backup, but Time Machine CAN'T FIND IT'S OWN FILES EVEN THOUGH I CAN SEE THEM.
I am SO switching to Vista as soon as I can. Unfortunately for me, I'm not so rich that I can afford to buy a new computer more often than every 3 years, and that's if I'm lucky. I could install Vista on my MacBook, but what's the point if my hardware fails?
Right now I'm just going to start brute-force backing up everything I have and manually converting them to PC-readable formats. I may be able to save my e-mails by using the backups I saved from before I bought this computer combined with messages that I hope are still on the original servers. This is why I don't "erase e-mail from server when downloaded."
Yes, Apple's phone support and store personnel, though brainwashed cult members, are extremely helpful and courteous. They don't get brownie points for that, though, because I had to pay $300 for AppleCare to get it. One Mac guy was actually pushing the shitty, scratch-magnet plastic that they switched to FROM FUCKING TITANIUM on their notebook computers by saying that it was the same kind of plastic as bullet-proof vests are made of.
WHAT?!? Is it actually bullet-proof? NO! is that a feature I would need in a notebook computer? NO! Is the composite material in a bullet-proof vest known for being attractive and scratch resistant? NO! It's known for being worn under clothes and stopping bullets in a configuration nothing like it is on a MacBook. My drinking water is the same kind that's used in nuclear reactors, just with 1 less oxygen atom, but it's the same stuff, basically. Just hydrogen and oxygen in a slightly different configuration. Is my water "basically" nuclear weapons grade, then?
The G3/G4 towers from 1999 were rumored to actually be bullet-proof, not just made from bullet-proof components. I may just test that theory soon with my old G4 tower. Anyone interested in the video if I do it?
