The Bull Pen #6
I was going to write this edition about my recent experience in the OMM clan tournament but it is in the best interest of the readers of this blog (all 8 of you) that I decline as I tend to live up to my name when discussing it. It is not disguising a bad performance by any stretch of the imagination; in fact, my performance was probably an eye-opener to the other team, who apparently can sleep at night knowing they lucked out with the tiebreaker. However, that is all I will say about that and I have probably already said too much.
Instead, I would like to wax poetic about a topic that trumps Halo 2 in terms of enjoyment factor. I am a roller coaster enthusiast. My screen name comes not from the De Niro movie but from an awesome B&M coaster at Six Flags Great America just north of Chicago. B&M make some of the best coasters on the planet and I am blessed to be within a day’s drive of a good ton of them. You may not know the name but you would recognize the design as all B&M coasters have 4 across seating. They have pioneered some unique ridetypes, including the inverted coaster, the floorless coaster, and the flying coaster. Most of my top ten steel coasters (when I bother to try and rank them as I hate ranking coasters) are B&M creations. Only a ride such as Millennium Force is able to make me think about something other than B&M. I have converted my wife to the cult of B&M and it is always a pleasure to hear her call out when she can first hear the B&M roar when we arrive at a park. All in all, I could be a level 50 Halo 2 player and the opportunity to go ride a B&M roller coaster and coasters in general would yank me away from even a tournament.
Back to Halo 2, have you ever noticed that you seem to do better with some people on your side than others? I mean, sure, the player in question could be a lot better than a lot of the opponents but if the player was equal to others, do you notice that you seem to function better? I have made little sticky notes in the back of my brain about how well I seem to do when I am on the same team as Q007 and DanLeCrinque. They are both better than me in terms of skill but I just seem to elevate my game when I am on the same team as them. I was surprised recently in a multi-team game to see that not only had I outscored Q (by 1) in a multi-team game but that our combined kills were higher than the second place team. Of course, our partner chipped in 5 kills to get us the 50 for victory but it was basically a 2 man army. On the flip side, the opponents can also have a lot to do with how you perform but it just seems to be a trend that some people work better together as a team because of varying skill sets.
Custom game of the Week: Iwo Jima. This is my name for a 2-flag CTF style game with SWAT rules. The starting weapons BR’s and Magnums with no vehicles or weapons on the map. The flag does not have to be at home to score and 30 seconds is the respawn time. I’ve never actually had a chance to try this so I cannot make comments on how it plays or which maps work best (try Zanzibar, Turf, or Headlong). Perhaps you, the loyal reader, could give it a try and offer your own suggestions and feedback?

The Bull Pen #5
Where should I begin this edition of the Bull Pen? I could talk about my successes last night in Halo, including a Rampage in a game of Pimp My Hog thanks to judicious use of the tank. I could ramble on about how I need to conduct a driving test sometimes before I let somebody drive me around in a Gauss Warthog (just drive well, I’ll take care of the rest). Instead, I would like to discuss something that I have experienced recently in a custom party. The issue that arose was a complaint about starting parameters in a custom game. I’ll refrain from using names but the complaint was about starting Burial Mounds in a slayer game with SMG’s. The starting weapon was changed to Battle Rifles and the game was played out. At the end of the game, a few people dropped out quickly and someone in the party spoke out about those who had complained in the first place; basically, this person (Mr. X) was saying that they should go start their own party and let the party leader handle things the way they want to. As I left the party after that game (my effectiveness as a Halo player was gone for the night), I thought about Mr. X’s comments, irregardless of whether or not he was being serious, and approached them from my standpoint. On one hand, I agree that the party leader should have the freedom of what he wants to do. The person has his reasons for being the party leader whether it is random luck or someone decided that they would be a good party leader. On the other hand though, I have to believe that being a good party leader also involves listening to the members of the party. It is a lot easier to tell someone to hit the road and make their own party than to try and include them in the game choice process. It is not always easy to leave one party and join up with another one of comparable size (especially now with GRAW sucking people away). We all have different personalities and we like different kinds of games. I know I have been frustrated before by certain party leader’s selections of games and have bit my tongue. The flipside of that is the fact that I rarely get thought of as a next selection for party leader, likely because of my quirky set of games (Room of Doom anyone?). It is a delicate balance to keep the party happy but also ensure that you get to reap the rewards of being the party leader.
By the way, now that you are probably curious, I’ll let you in on the secret of the gametypes I like: SWAT style games, big team battle games with objectives (CTF and assault), Fiesta style team slayer games (especially weakest link), and the always popular Pimp My Hog.
Custom Game of the Week: Fiesta Grande. I whipped up this after thinking about how I could spice up a typical Fiesta team slayer game. Basically, it is random everything on the map, weapons, vehicles, etc. What makes this a Grande game is that there is a time limit (10 minutes is recommended although 15 minutes could make this a Mucho Grande game) and bonus points are turned on (but not death point loss). The winner is the team with the most points at the end of the 10 minutes. I figured it would be something to add a little style to the game as a player who can collect the more elusive medals is going to add to his team. Depending on the party size, it can be played on virtually every map. Turf worked well with a party of 10-12. I hope that my fellow OMM mates will want to try this game again in the near future.
P.S. READ THE OTHER BULL PENS BECAUSE MY COMMENTS HAVE BEEN SURPISINGLY SPARSE.

I really am addicted to the website http://www.junk.ws/halo2/ thanks to the ability to know your stats and break down your performance into a variety of areas. It also keeps track of stuff a lot easier than Bungie. I am mentioning it because I am about to hit a milestone in my Halo performance, or at least in the games that the site has tracked. I will finally tally a better than 1 Kills per Death ratio. That is one of the golden stats in how well you do as a Halo player. The ability to kill someone just a bit more than they kill you has numerous implications. Of course, the stat comes with a caveat for readers as my KpD ratio is mainly derived from playing arranged games with clanmates and fellow 2o2p’ers. On the flip side though, I am usually playing against quality opponents of equal or slightly better skill level. I could care less about being a total rank of 20 or above but the KpD ratio is something that makes me happy. (Just checked and it hangs precariously at 1.002)
A post and poll by LBSUTKE has me wondering how people perceive my skills as a Halo player. I know I am not to be feared by the likes of some of the hardcore players on the sight but I would like to think that teammates of mine during games are glad that I am on the squad. I have my days of looking awesome and being “in the zone” in regards to my Halo play. In fact, back to back team leads in Weakest Link games on 3/5/06 are something I got excited about. I do have my off days though as well as the fact that there are certain game types and certain opponents that have my number. Let us just say that I tend to want to avoid PapaHamster in any type of punchout game on Lockout or Ivory Tower and any SMG game on Ivory Tower. I also have to point out that I find it in my best interests to have Lonewolf1973 on my team as he seems to pull out the Voorhees Unreality Engine on me time and time again. You can usually tell when things are not going good for the Bull as I tend to get very sulky. I have tried to get better at communications as well because yelling out, “Here they come” or “He was over there”, does not inspire folks to think of your tactical brilliance. I just wonder what kind of yearbook award I would win if the OMM did such a thing.
My custom game type highlight of the week is a Juggernaut match that had an interesting first game, which derived some tweaks in the settings. The name of the game is Steven Seagal, in order to represent the seemingly indestructible nature of Seagal in most of his movies. The Juggernaut has Overshield, runs fast, has damage resistance, inflicts more damage, and basically has all the extra powers except active camo. The players have no shields and the weapons on the map are default. The first time I ran this, the Juggernaut had active camo and the players had no motion sensor, which made it next to impossible to kill the Juggernaut since we played on Turf. I changed those two options since that kind of blowout would get old real fast. This gametype is best played on a map without rockets as that is the one weapon that can take the Seagal effect away in a hurry. You could alternatively give this game names such as Chuck Norris, etc. I’m not a big fan of Juggernaut games but if you set it up right, you can have some quick time killing games of this while you are waiting for a party to get bigger or full.

I know there are some folks out there who probably dread when I end up with party leader because I inevitably like to throw out my favorite custom game, Room of Doom. Room of Doom is not the kind of game you would like if you enjoy MLG type games or something set up for more serious gamers. Instead, Room of Doom is a game for the carnage seeking sadist in all of us. This gametype is basically set up to be king of the hill with a non-moving hill and the only weapon on the map is rockets. It gets its name from the fact that I like to play it on Backwash, where the hill is stuck in the center room with the column in the middle of it. I suppose it could be played on Foundation but I have not really given it a try.
Most Room of Doom games last about 8 minutes with a hill win time set to 2 minutes. You rarely last long on the hill because of the weapons and the hill location. I have tracked the kills in the game and compared them to the game length. A typical RoD game averages a death every 2.7 seconds. Depending on the number of players, I have seen total kills in the neighborhood of 200-300 for an 8 minute game. I always have a blast playing it even though there is always concern about lag and other issues. It has inspired me to create a similar game where two teams face off on a tight map with only rockets and the match has an 8 minute time limit, most kills wins.
On a different topic, I am both looking forward to and dreading the upcoming OMM in-clan tourney. On one hand, I have a competitive spirit in me and want to see how our team does against other teams in the clan. The flipside is that I am concerned how this could create friction among us. Sure, bragging rights will be involved but I hope this does not become an exclusivity group where a winning team tends to hang out together and excludes other people from joining them. I’m also concerned with how some of us lesser skilled players will end up faring. We all get curious about who is the best at something or is the worst at something (DanLeCrinque = Tank Whore) but as long as we remember that it should be a fun experience for all involved, things will not get out of hand. For those who care, if we were playing multiplayer as if we were a real army, I would much prefer to be on the tactical side of things as planning is my best suit.

I recently purchased games #26 (Fable), #27 (Jade Empire), and #28 (Mechassault 2) to add to my ever growing XBOX collection. I would like to think that it is a very diverse collection of XBOX games anchored by a strong lineup of first person shooters, since it is my favorite game genre. However, upon further inspection, there are a surprisingly high number of action games as well as sports titles.
First Person Shooters: Halo, Halo 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline, Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Sports: NHL 2K3, ESPN NHL 2K5, ESPN NFL2K5, College Hoops 2K6, Amped
Racing: Sega GT, Project Gotham Racing
Platform: Jet Set Radio Future, Voodoo Vince, Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
RPG: Knights of the Old Republic, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Fable, Jade Empire
Action: Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, Prince of Persia :The Sands of Time, The Simpsons: Hit and Run, MechAssault, MechAssault 2, Crimson Skies. Star Wars Battlefront 2
Stealth: Splinter Cell
I would like to point out one game on this list in particular and that is Jet Set Radio Future. It is a game that I got with the first XBOX Bundle and kept me so enthralled that I did not even buy Halo until about a month and a half later. I can understand why the game did not sell well as it is rather unique in terms of platform games but the quality of the game is wonderful. There are some tunes in the game that will stick in your mind long after the game is over. The cel shading graphics look wonderful and the gameplay, while simplistic at times, offers some challenges that are fun to try. I will go out on a limb with this but I think the game would have done 10x better if it had been released with XBOX Live capabilities. The multiplayer modes would have been better to play against real humans and offer a different mix from your FPS, racing, or sports online types. Anyways, JSRF is a game that you should pick up; that is, if you can find it and can find it at a reasonable price.
In Halo 2 custom game action, I got a chance to run Checkered Flag the other night for the second time and things did not go so well the second time around; well, at least for me and my team. 8 to 12 players (even teams) is still the preferred setting but I wish there was some way to make the Warthogs re-spawn faster. Perhaps a way I can modify the game is to make it a round based game instead of 1 round with score to 5 to win. That would tend to eliminate the issue of flag hoarding. If anybody else has run this game, please feel free to offer your suggestions.
Next time: I hope to discuss my favorite custom game, Room of Doom, as well as discuss some of the perils of playing mixed clan arranged games.
