5-month-old baby killed in clothes dryer in Harvey

A 5-month-old boy was killed in Harvey Thursday when his baby sitter allegedly put him in her clothes dryer because she had become frustrated with him, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said.

The baby sitter, Ariel Smith, 19, was booked with first-degree murder.

Smith, of 512 MacArthur Drive in Harvey, called 911 shortly before 11:15 a.m. and reported a baby at that location who was not breathing, said JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato.

First responders found the child, Andre Jenkins, lying on the floor unresponsive at that address, the JPSO spokesman said. The child was pronounced dead on the scene.

JPSO investigators learned the infant was dropped off along with his 18-month-old brother at Smith's home Thursday morning by his mother, identified as Brandy Dozier, Fortunato said.

Smith first told investigators that burns on the child's body were received when his brother pushed a pot of boiling water from her stove onto the child, he said.

Under questioning by homicide detective Keith Locascio, Smith later admitted the infant sustained the burns when she placed him into the clothes dryer, turned it on and left the room, Fortunato said.

"She stated she was frustrated with the child, " Fortunato said.

When she returned, the child wasn't breathing, she told investigators, Fortunato said.

Dozier, the child's mother, said she left for work after dropping off the children and later received a call from Smith telling her that the child had stopped breathing, Fortunato said.

Triggers Down becomes MLG Orlando Champs!!!!!

MLG Orlando marked only the midpoint of the 2008 Pro Circuit Season, and it has perhaps already secured its place as the most exciting and tumultuous in league history. In every single event, the competition has rapidly reached a fever pitch. As the level of awareness spreads across the globe, exponentially more competitors are emerging from the ether with every passing event, thus pushing the mastery required to win each game to previously unheard heights. The ride through the rest of the season will be anything but tame, and you won't want to miss a minute of it. But first, the lowdown on this incredible Orlando competition…

The way Halo 3 is played at the top level is mutating at a phenomenal pace, and we are constantly seeing the game develop as teams discover more and more ways to maximize efficiency and teamwork. Far and away, the most impressive examples of this were Triggers Down and Str8 Rippin, two teams that positively towered above all of the others in MLG Orlando. Naturally, they found themselves face to face in the Championship Match, and while the series was hotly contested, Triggers Down was eventually able to emerge victorious. This marked the first time since September 2005 that a team besides Final Boss, Str8 Rippin and Carbon won an MLG Halo Championship, and signaled the emergence of an unbelievably talented new top contender.

Gears of War made a triumphant return to the Pro Circuit with a packed lineup of top caliber teams eager to get back into the action. Frag Domant made major strides between events by acquiring Mr. X and Finest, who gave the team just the jolt they needed to leap from their Meadowlands fourth place finish all the way to the top of the podium. As Mr. X proclaimed following the victory, many people believe they witnessed the birth of a new dynasty this weekend, and we can't wait to find out how much weight the claim holds in Toronto next month.

Orlando's World of WarCraft competition expanded upon the success of MLG's explosion onto the PC scene with its San Diego debut. The world's best WoW teams once again collided in an unparalleled tournament environment that cemented MLG's reputation as the only platform for true competitive gaming. When the dust settled, Orz emerged victorious, which marked the first time a female gamer has finished in first place at an MLG-sanctioned competition. Once again, literally hundreds of thousands of people tuned in to the live broadcast from over 100 different countries, and the future holds nothing but greatness for this fantastically competitive game.

The Rainbow Six Vegas 2 competition was full of upsets as teams shuffled around since Orlando in hopes of finding a magic combination of players. It would appear that vVv ReWriTTeN has found such a roster, improving upon their previous fourth place finish with an absolutely crushing first place finish at this event. It's clear that players are beginning to turn the game's strategy from its experimental stages into a science, and it will be thrilling to watch the competition arc ever-upward throughout the rest of the season.

Spurs blast Hornets to tie series

SAN ANTONIO -- The only objective Peja Stojakovic had since last Tuesday was to win just one game on the Spurs' home court. It did not appear to be an insurmountable task after the Hornets routed the Spurs in the first two games of the second-round playoff series.

But Stojakovic found out -- just like the Phoenix Suns did in the first round and the Cleveland Cavaliers in last season's NBA Finals -- that defeating the Spurs at the AT&T Center may one of the most difficult challenges in the postseason.

Instead of returning home with a commanding 3-1 series lead, the series is now tied at 2 after the Spurs blasted the Hornets 100-80 on Sunday night.

Although the series resumes Tuesday night in New Orleans, no matter what happens the Hornets will have to return to San Antonio for Game 6. Sunday's game was the Spurs' 11th consecutive postseason victory at home.

"We definitely came with that mentality, to steal one game, but we also know the Spurs are the defending champions," said Stojakovic, who entered Game 4 with an 18.3 scoring average but was held to six points, his second consecutive game in single digits.

"They respond and play good basketball at home. We haven't played close to the defense we played in New Orleans that we played here. We all know our offense comes from a good defense."

The Spurs perfected just about everything the Hornets spent the past two days preparing to stop after losing 110-99 on Thursday.

Coach Byron Scott urged his players to push the tempo, keep Spurs stars Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili from driving to the basket and limit Tim Duncan as best as possible.

None of those three objectives were accomplished. Parker got through first and second lines of defenses. Ginobili made difficult shots, and Duncan had no problems shooting over Tyson Chandler.

Duncan led the Spurs with 22 points, Parker scored 21 and Ginobili had 15. The Spurs made 51 percent of their shots, and they made eight 3-pointers. The Spurs were unable to score more than 84 points in each of the first two games against the Hornets in New Orleans. By the end of the third quarter Sunday night, they had 85 points and a 24-point lead after outscoring the Hornets 30-19 in the quarter.

Hornets point guard Chris Paul constantly faced traps, but he finished with a team-high 23 points. However, he had only five assists and committed four turnovers.

"Defensively, I thought we were all over the place," said forward David West, who scored 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting. "We were not able to contain Parker, Ginobili or Duncan. We didn't play with any fire."

Before the game, Scott did not change his starting lineup, but he assigned Stojakovic instead of Morris Peterson to defend Ginobili. Peterson guarded Bruce Bowen. In Game 3, Ginobili and Parker combined for 62 points and 17 assists. The Hornets' goal was to force Ginobili and Parker to take perimeter shots instead of driving to the basket. The Spurs' stars, however, did both.

The Hornets were unable to avoid execution problems as soon as the game started. They quickly trailed after missing nine of their first 11 shots. Another bad sign came on the defensive end, when they could not keep Parker from scoring on drives or Duncan from making close-range jumpers.

It went downhill quickly for the Hornets in the second quarter when the Spurs went on a 15-4 run and never looked back. They took away nearly all of the Hornets' scoring options with a scrambling coverage that converged with double teams on West. Chandler did not score his first points until 15 seconds remained before halftime when he made two free throws.

Duncan had his way from within 10 feet with jumpers and drives. Parker still was able to penetrate through the middle of the lane to score. The Spurs closed out the half making 57.5 percent of their shots with Parker leading with 18 points and Duncan with 15 on 7-of-10 shooting.

After trailing 55-42 at halftime, the Hornets opened the third quarter with West losing the ball out of bounds. A few minutes later, Peterson beat his defenders twice but missed two layups.

Chandler picked up two quick fouls trying to defend Duncan. Then, he stayed in the game with four fouls and quickly picked up his fifth after fouling Ginobili. The Spurs took a 66-47 lead after outscoring the Hornets 11-6 at the start of the third quarter.

"Again, we're playing against the defending champions," Scott said. "I've been through this a bunch of times. As long as they continue to see me calm and very confident, they'll be the same way."

Spurs beat Hornets 110-99

SAN ANTONIO -- The Hornets came into the second round of the playoffs knowing they had the opportunity to advance beyond the conference semifinals for the first time in franchise history. Now the San Antonio Spurs have a possible first on the horizon: coming back from a 2-0 playoff series deficit to advance.

A home court and better performances from two of the Spurs' stars mattered for them Thursday night, as San Antonio beat New Orleans 110-99 before a sellout crowd of 18,797 at the AT&T Center. The Hornets lead the series 2-1, with Game 4 in San Antonio on Sunday night.

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili had 31 points, while point guard Tony Parker had 31 points and 11 assists. The Hornets still managed to limit forward Tim Duncan, who finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

But the Spurs shined in a spot where the Hornets had previously dominated this series -- the third quarter. San Antonio won that period 29-22, taking their biggest lead of the game to that point, 83-78, and building on it in the fourth quarter.

"I thought we played 48 minutes for the first time this series, and it got us a win," Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich said.

Point guard Chris Paul led the Hornets with 35 points and nine assists, and forward David West finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds. The Hornets' perimeter shooting was relatively quiet, as forward Peja Stojakovic had eight points on 2-of-7 shooting and guard Morris Peterson finished with three points.

"Basically, they took us right out of our game, and I thought we lost our composure a little bit, as well," Hornets Coach Byron Scott said.

The Hornets' last win at the AT&T Center was their first against the Spurs this season, a breakthrough 24-point victory Jan. 26 that Scott called his best win with the team.

"That was the turning point of our season for our team," Hornets center Tyson Chandler said Thursday morning. "Up until then, we had beaten teams, but nobody like the Spurs, nobody that held that kind of weight. I think it gave us confidence as a team and even as individuals."

More than three months later, the Hornets found themselves coming to San Antonio with even more confidence -- and with a 2-0 series lead against the Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals. The Spurs have never recovered to win a playoff series after losing the first two games, a fact that Scott said scared him before Game 3, especially after seeing the Hornets accomplish so many firsts this season.

"I don't think you're going to see anything but a hungry team coming out tonight," Chandler said of the Hornets before the game, dismissing the idea of a possible letdown. "We still understand that we're playing against the champs. We're never going to forget that, no matter what the case is."

In case they needed a reminder, the Hornets got it in the second half. The Spurs completed an 11-0 run that carried through about the midway point of the fourth quarter and ignited the crowd. That was enough for the Spurs to overcome a first half that somewhat resembled the two previous games in the series.

"They're not a team you're going to stop," Popovich said about the Hornets. "You just try to hang in there and you try to do your work for 48 minutes."

The first quarter quickly established Paul and Parker as their teams' biggest early threats. Paul made 7-of-11 shots in the first period for 14 points, while Parker had 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. The Hornets began the game on an 8-0 run -- another early shock to the Spurs' system -- but led 23-21 after 12 minutes.

"We just have to be able to withstand their runs," West said Thursday morning. "We know they're going to come out feeding off the energy of the crowd, make a run. We just have to make sure we can withstand it."

Popovich started Ginobili in place of Michael Finley for the first time in the series, a move that was probably designed to create some of those runs and that seemed to pay off. Ginobili led the Spurs at halftime with 16 points, while Parker had 12 and Finley 11 off the bench.

The Hornets, however, shot 53.2 percent through two quarters and grabbed their first halftime lead of the series, 56-54. Paul had 18 points and six assists at the half, while West had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Hornets had a halftime lead in almost every major statistical category -- rebounding, points in the paint, points off turnovers, second-chance points and fast-break points. But just as the Hornets had already recovered from two halftime deficits this series, the Spurs found a way to do it and win on their home court

The Return to H3/COD4

Well with the birth of my youngest daughter, I agreed with my wife that I would lay off of Video games for awhile. So here I am 2 months, 2 weeks and 3 days later and my return is looming. Hopefully this weekend I will be "Allowed" to continue my quest to waste as much of my free time as possible. My wife doesn't really appreicate the older gamer. Every now and then I will catch her playing pacman or some other arcade game and just hope she will understand my addiction. Nevertheless, my time spent on online gaming, pales in comparison. So I guess my wife and I will continue to be in a heated battle over video games, because I will never stop playing. "Do you hear me women" NEVER! (lol) So with all of this said, I'm just praying she will let me play.

Hornets take 2-0 series lead against Spurs

Hornets forward David West knew the Spurs were going to feed the ball to star Tim Duncan early and often in Game 2 on Monday night after he was held to five points in his team's opening loss of the second-round Western Conference playoff series.

And with the Hornets ready on the defensive end and point guard Chris Paul utilizing his skills as a playmaker and scorer, the Hornets blitzed the Spurs 102-84 in front of a sellout crowd of 17,927 at the New Orleans Arena. Duncan scored a team-high 18 points, but he was largely ineffective in the third quarter, when the Hornets went on a game-changing run.

The Hornets now have a commanding 2-0 lead against the defending-champion Spurs. The best-of-seven series resumes Thursday night at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The Hornets have never advanced beyond the conference semifinals, but are now only two victories from playing the Los Angeles Lakers-Utah Jazz winner in the Western Conference finals.

"I'm proud of the way this team has played," Hornets Coach Byron Scott said. "We've had a heck of a season. We still got a lot of people out there that doubt us. I think that's what fuels these guys."

Paul led the way again with a game-high 30 points and 12 assists. Forward Peja Stojakovic scored 25 points on 8-of-13 shooting, which included five of seven 3-pointers. Shooting guard Morris Peterson made all five shots from the field for 12 points, and the Hornets made 48 percent of their shots.

After trailing 43-42 at halftime, the Hornets opened the third quarter with Stojakovic hitting a 3-pointer, a Paul finger-roll layup and a 3-pointer from Peterson, and the rout was on.

Three minutes into the quarter, the Hornets had a nine-point lead and Duncan began to show the same frustration as he did in Game 1.

Hornets win first playoff series in N.O.

With confetti falling from the rafters, Hornets star guard Chris Paul was wrapped in the warm embrace of his teammates as they celebrated the team's signature moment since moving to New Orleans in 2002 -- a playoff series victory.

The Hornets -- who just three years ago only won 18 games -- eliminated the Dallas Mavericks in five games 99-94 on Tuesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 18,260 at the New Orleans Arena.

"It's been a long ride," Hornets forward David West said. "The last few years, we felt like we've taken steps to get better. We've had guys come in that fit right in. We were able to take steps forward."

The Hornets never trailed Tuesday night, and Paul was sensational as a playmaker, rebounder and scorer. He finished with a triple double -- 24 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds.

"Congratulations to a young Nate Archibald (in Paul)," Mavericks Coach Avery Johnson said. "He is a special player, relentless. He is strong. He is intelligent. He has a bright future. He and his coach have great chemistry."

Paul got the ball often to West, who scored 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Center Tyson Chandler scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Jannero Pargo came off the bench and scored 17.

Paul was assertive from the start, pushing the tempo to keep the Mavericks on their heels. At one point he made a crossover dribble against guard Jason Terry that sent him moving in the opposite direction before flipping a pass to Julian Wright.

For the series, Paul averaged 24.6 points, 12 assists, 2.0 steals and 5.6 rebounds.

"I said I didn't want to go to Dallas (for a possible Game 6)," Paul said. "We're not popping champagne, but we're happy. Everything that we have done is all about this city. It's about rebuilding the city of New Orleans. The fans have been here for us. They are the reason that we're playing so well. We are going to fight always no matter what the environment is like, especially on the road."

Before the game, Hornets Coach Byron Scott received a standing ovation when he was presented the Red Auerbach Trophy as the NBA's Coach of the Year. Now, Scott will begin preparations to play the San Antonio Spurs in a second-round series that will start in New Orleans on Saturday.

"That was probably the toughest game we played," Scott said. "Dallas has no quit in them. They kept coming and coming. But we did what we had to do at home tonight."

In four of the five games against the Mavericks, the Hornets were a step quicker, more assertive and better defenders. Even with their season on the line, the Mavericks did not make their most assertive push until the final 1:18.

They trimmed a 17-point deficit to 97-94 with 33.2 seconds remaining. But any hope the Mavericks had of extending the series ended after forward Peja Stojakovic made two free throws with 5.7 seconds to give the Hornets a five-point lead.

"Right now, I think we're all disappointed," said Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, who struggled at times to make jump shots and finished with 22 points in 48 minutes. "I think we're a little better than what we showed in these games. You don't want to say stuff when you're emotional and disappointed. But we didn't play well enough to win this series. I don't want to take anything away from New Orleans. They've got what you need to be a good team."

Whether Scott needed bench scoring from Pargo or defensive stops by Chandler, his players delivered.

Pargo repeatedly made long-range shots, even with Mavericks draped over him. He ended the series averaging 14.6 points, after scoring a team-high 30 in Game 3.

"We wanted the opportunity to close this thing out," Pargo said. "I just wanted to help in any way I could."

Pargo made his presence felt in the second quarter, hitting his first four shots and scoring nine points.

Unable to stop that kind of execution caused Mavs guard Jerry Stackhouse to lose his composure. In the fourth quarter, Stackhouse punched the ball out of Paul's hands after play had stopped and received his second technical foul, an automatic ejection.

The Hornets never stopped playing aggressively. After the Mavericks tied the score at 32 in the second quarter, the Hornets closed out the final eight minutes on a 22-7 run to lead 54-39 at halftime. In the third quarter, New Orleans led by 11.

"We came into the postseason expecting to win," West said. "We put it on ourselves to win this series. We felt all along that we had enough to do that. A lot of people may be surprised on how this thing turned out, but we're not too surprised. We look forward to moving on."
