The Phun Invasion

This weekend my home was taken over by a free PC game that I found called PHun. It is a 2D physics simulator that animates and applies physics to anything you create. For instance, you can use the brush to draw any closed shape, and then it will fill-in and fall with gravity, be affected by wind, air friction and even bounce. You can liquify anything and make complex objects. You can pin objects in space, add motors, and the results are fantastic. My passion is for making infinite ball machines (like an obstacle course for ping-pong balls that never stops.) But mostly we built walls of blocks and made up ways to knock them down.

It can be taxing on your CPU, especially if you use water. My kids are 7 and 4 and both could use the program, but making advanced shapes and engines requires dad. I was literally running back and forth between two computers where they were each working on their Phun projects.

Details are sparse at this point, but it looks like it's going to be second gen Zunes only, since it was specifically mentioned that it'd take advantage of the touchpad controls. We'll let you know more as we get it."

Pretty cool stuff. I love my zune and I really dig the XNA toolkit idea. Glad to see future possibilities like this. I may dork around with the xna toolkit some day.

Homebrew UAV... So Cool!

It's a wired video on PBS. One of my hobbies is amatuer robotics. Nothing serious but its fun geeky stuff to do with my young boys. This is sort of the same thing but instead of little robot tanks or rovers like I make, these guys build robot controlled planes. Coolness. Just passing it on. I use vex (http://www.vexlabs.com) and would like to get into the new lego mindstorms too. Xbox sort of took over my hobby time lately (Damn you COD4!!) and all of my gear is packed away while we are having some work done on the house. But this spring I plan to revive it and build some stuff.

Scary kid. Another reason I don't want to play with timmies. I just don't want to be a part of some kid breaking down like this. I know of other people that simply leave rooms when there are kids in them. We have all been angry when the game crashes or somebody kills the power without a save. But young people (I guess even 18yo kids) don't always have the faculties to manage the stress. I spend enough time with my own kids such that by the time you see me on my xbox, my desire to parent is all dried up. Hat's off to the dad that pulled the plug. It was obviously warranted as the guy was obsessing.
