Meet my Avatar

This is me, well, me trapped inside Microsoft's fun house that is NXE. This morning, Microsoft released their new dashboard. It is mostly a cosmetic and organizational update, but one cool feature is a wii'like avatar system. Now, to be fair, this looks nothing like me. I only had a few minutes with it and I'm always horrible at these character creation tools. I definitely have less hair than that

One thing I'm concerned with is: How am I supposed to appear like a pwnage machine when people can just look and see that I'm just a tall white skinny dude. Oh well.

I Did It!!

I bought a PS3. Yes, that's right, a PS3. To make things worse, I only bought it for one game. Little Big Planet - and worse yet? I can't play it until Christmas.

Random weekend thoughts

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged and I know you both have really missed me. Truth is I have either been swamped at work, or playing Fallout 3….What a game. I’m just going to blog about random crap, so bear with me.

This weekend was as normal as it could be, other than my puppy (almost) swallowing a pair of tweezers. It freaked me out so much. My wife stuck her hand down his throat and he coughed it up, but wow, that could have been quite severe (and expensive). We have now combed the entire floor for small metal objects. It still worries me when we leave him alone.

I took the last of my three-Monday-vacation yesterday and logged some serious Fallout time. I’m 26 hours into it now, and am just starting to get some quests done. This game is already a 360 classic for me right up there with Bioshock and Halo and I’m not even done.

Well, I have been assimilated to the PS3 side against my will. Char has taken it upon herself to add me to 2old2resist in anticipation of my PS3 and Little Big Planet purchase. I feel so used. *shrugs* oh well, could be worse, I could have been added to a WoW clan

Have I mentioned that I am cursed? In the two thousand and some odd Halo 3 games that I’ve played, I have been unable to get a non-griffball running riot (15 kills in a row). I pride myself at not dieing a lot and because of that do get quite a few killing frenzies (10 kills in a row). Most of the time it is my fault that I don't get 15. I get to 14, and I know this because I am counting (which is a bad thing), and then I see someone and just get tunnel vision. This doesn’t usually yield the kill and I get all pissed. Last night was a perfect example: Valhalla slayer and we spawned waterfall base (which is the better side, imo). I grab a BR and head to laser top-mid. I’m surprised that there isn’t any resistance there since that is usually the first battle in the game. I grab the laser and go to town. I basically just hung out top-mid the whole game, and nobody got past me. I got the killing frenzy and thought, “ok, pace yourself, just be patient”. I got a double on a warty with the laser, and then took down a banshee…13….Then I team shot a guy jumping out the middle cannon……14…..ok, at this point, my heart was pounding in anticipation for the running riot, but I remained calm and waited, then it finally happened: A guy was wandering around in the creek with no shields, I looked around and no one was there to ambush me. I zoomed in, aimed and……BAM. “PwnedUrMom sniped you”……dammit!!! I’m cursed forever.

I read an interesting article recently about the Toyota Prius Hybrid and how it is actually more damaging to the environment than a regular car. Now, as a caveat, they are more economical than regular cars if you are only concerned with your own pocketbook, but if the reason for getting one is for the greater good, then read on. The batteries in these cars are made with nickel (among other materials). The nickel is mined in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada (what a shithole) and shipped on a huge freighter to Europe where it is refined into a workable material. Then it’s off to china to be made into batteries. From there they would be sent to Japan for assembly. Once assembled, are shipped to the dealers. For North America, that means the car circumnavigates the globe in its production. You can read the article here.

Crazy-ass Canadians

If this face wasn't enough to scare the shit out of you, the following will.

Mark Twitchell (in the photo) lured a man to an Edmonton, Alberta garage by posing as a female on a dating site. He then proceeded to kill and dismember his body, "Dexter style". Turns out that this guy is an independant movie producer and he had a script written with this exact scenario in it. When the victim, Brian Atlinger (whom a co-worker went to high school with) showed up for some hot sex-action (or a confrontation with Chris Hansen), Mr. Twitchell was wearing a black and gold hockey mask (Jason style).

Oddly, a few weeks earlier, neighbours saw a man running from the garage with another man chasing in a hockey mask. Guess they just thought it was a road hockey game. It is Canada!

So, now you can't ride a grayhound OR go to a complete stranger's house after meeting them brieflyonline? What a country.

Fallout, Towels and Snow oh my!

It’s been a while, so this is a long one. Bear with me.

It’s snowing here now……in OCTOBER!! I really hope this doesn’t persist because I can’t handle a long winter. We didn’t get that much snow, but any time it snows before Halloween is bad. I haven’t even raked my lawn, and there are still leaves on the trees! My dog, who was born in January, doesn’t seem to remember the snow, so he was freaking out. He kept lifting his paws up because the ground was so cold. The look he gave me when I first brought him out was priceless, it was like, “wtf is all this shit?”

If you haven’t been reading my blogs, then well, you suck, but you also would have not known that my 360 is in the shop and I had to borrow one off my friend. Well, I had to return it to him on Monday and was getting pissed because Fallout 3 was coming out and I was not going to be able to play (oh noes!). On Sunday night, I decided to find my old launch 360 that red-ringed a while ago and try the towel trick. For those not hip on the 360 terms, the towel trick is where you wrap your broken box in towels and fire it up. It overheats the thermal paste inside and creates a good seal between the heatsink and the processor (I assume). I was skeptical at first, but after 30 minutes of baking (fire extinguisher at the ready), and 15 minutes of cool down, it actually worked! I couldn’t believe it. Now, this is only a temporary fix, and I expect it to kak out any day now, but being able to play Fallout has made my week.

On the topic of Fallout, this is truly an epic game. From the makers of Oblivion, Bethesda has really kept true to their style, while creating a refreshing take on open world RPG adventure games. I won’t go into details, but suffice to say that the immersion factor while traversing the wasteland rivals some of my favourite games, including Bioshock. There are no roads, or paths and you really get the sense that you are scrounging for anything that could possibly help you, or make you bottle caps (the currency in the game). Walking through nuked towns is both scary and beautiful. Every blown out house has a story of its own. I walked into one that only had one skeleton in the bathtub. You could imagine that he/she was spending their last moments relaxing in the tub; quite moving. I am only 2 ½ hours into this game, but I can imagine hundreds more moments like this one before I complete it.

So, I have entered into a whole new realm of nerd-dom. Over the weekend, I went looking for not one, but two Gears of War COG tags that were placed here in Toronto for people to find. Now, I normally contain my nerdy side to my house and this website, but this had me out walking around looking for little metal gears so that I could claim my 15 seconds of internet fame. Sadly, I didn’t find either one of them, but maybe it was for the best…

A plan Ruined

Well, my plan to take off the monday of each big release (Fable 2 and Fallout 3) has been ruined. I have had to send my 360 in for repair, and my friend has lent me his until next Tuesday. At least I can play Fable this coming Monday. Problem is that when Fallout comes out, I will have no 360. I have had to cancel my day off and re-schedule for whenever MS decides to sned mine back.

This couldn't have happened in the summer?

....and I hate chopping wood, I keep losing my chain!
