-beefy

Hulk cover finished

Well, here it is. Took a whole hell of a lot longer than I intended. Honestly, I got about 3/4 of the way done and just got really bored with this pic. I forced myself to just finish it up last night and now that it is I am pretty happy with it. There are parts that didn't come out great and parts I hate, but overall a good practice piece for digital painting. I think I now have the confidence to start working on putting together a submission to Marvel for a Cover Artist gig. I have about 6 pieces thumbnailed out and started painting two of 'em already. We'll see how it pans out, I don't really have high hopes, but what the hell, I'll give it a shot.

Cover to Hulk #5:

Pencils by Olivier Coipel, Inks by Mark Morales, Painted by me.

And the original line art:

Some messing around with pen and watercolors and a fast sketch using Sharpie markers. The scans for the watercolor stuff are horrible.

Robin:

Hulk WIP 2

Yeah, so, this shoulda been finished by now. Was hard to find time to work on it this week and honestly I got a little bored with it at one point. Needed to just work on something else for a few days. But here's my progress so far: Hulk is close to being done, I'm mostly happy with how he looks. Thor is a half-finished mess right now, somewhat happy with his arm, but not digging the rest, gotta rework it. The background is still very, very rough. It's been an interesting process so far, though I don't think I'd attempt to do any more paintover's of other people's work after this. It's a bit too restricting. Hoping to get this finished in the next few days.

My wife and daughter are going to Chicago for five days next week. Wow, five days with the house to myself. What will I do? Get lots of work done? Or sit around masturbating ferociously and play the shit out of my 360? Time will tell... I know for sure that I'll finally get to go see The Dark Knight, can't wait for that. It's been a bitch trying to avoid spoilers.

Once again: Original line art by Olivier Coipel and Mark Morales, paints by me.

Hulk W.I.P.

This is a small section of a digital painting I just started. It started out as just another practice/portfolio piece when I found this kickass line art from Olivier Coipel and Mark Morales online, but as soon as I started it I thought it would be a nice challenge to turn it into a painting with my own feel to it. I guess I was kinda inspired by the recent Marko Djurdevic paintover of one of Coipel's Thor covers. Digital painting is something I've really gotten into and would love to get good enough to do freelance illustrations and possible cover work for Marvel and DC, so hopefully this turns out good and will make a nice start to a new portfolio.

I wanted to share the work in progress simply because I love to see others' W.I.P.s to see how they work and flesh out a piece. You can see here that I start out very sloppy, roughly blocking out shapes and shadows, then working in colors and highlights before really tightening it up. I don't use many layers either, I like to keep as close to real painting as possible. I'm really still figuring it all out but this seems to be the most effective process for me. I'll post this when it's finished with the line art for comparison.

Cover to Hulk #5:

Pencils by: Olivier Coipel, Inks by: Mark Morales, Paints by: me

The first time I've really tried to ink a piece digitally, not too bad, kinda liked it. I then brought the inked version into Photoshop 7 to apply the grayscale colors. Text done in Illustrator. I'm really happy with this piece, though I'm probably not quite finished with it. I'll probably do a proper background for the version that will appear in the comic book. I did kind of incorporate the more gruesome idea I first had, though it's not nearly as graphic as I had originally intended.

"Nuclear Family":

*edit: Photobucket removed the uncensored version, oh well.

-beefy

Houston, meet problem...

So all kinds of crazy shit goin on at my wife's job, her boss fucked up big time and is facing possible criminal charges. Needless to say it's a pretty stressful work environment and my wife has had enough of it so she's started applying for other jobs, two of which are located in Chicago. She has a very good chance of getting either one and if she does that means a big fucking move in the very near future. Moving to Chicago would be pretty cool, we'd finally be living near family and we'd be the fuck out of California, but on the other hand, moving 2,000 miles with a baby, four pets, two cars (one of which needs repairs), all the shit we've accumulated and not a whole lotta money in the bank would be a colossal pain in the ass. Not looking forward to that if it comes to it. We'll just hafta see how it plays out.

Had some spare time tonight so I did this piece for my pal Ben over at http://www.hankhouston.blogspot.com/ . Big congrats to them for making the top 50 in this year's Platinum Studios' Comic Book Challenge! Did a grayscale version in PS7 over the inks but I'm not sure I like it so I'm including both.

Still need to add a background then I'll be inking and painting it in grayscale. I had a much more gruesome idea in mind for the baby and mom, but my wife forbid me from drawing it. Probably for the best.

Luke Cage, Hero for Hire:

I may do more in this style. Basically just roughly blocked out the figure in PS, tightened up the sketch a little bit, then used the lasso and paint bucket tool to fill it in, using the linework as a guide. Removed the linework and added the skull in the background and done. Franky here is a character I've been meaning to draw for a while now; he's had some pretty good comic runs throughout the years. Too bad the movies have all sucked though. I'm hoping the new one is better (it can't possibly be worse) but I don't have high hopes.

The Punisher:

Archangel:

Did a little sketch for a jam being held over on deviantART that involves drawing the "dome" of your favorite superhero. I drew Iron Fist, one of my favorite characters and books out there right now. I was playing the mediocre but fun Spider-man: Friend or Foe with a buddy on the Wii last week and we played until we unlocked ole Danny Rand here so I could pit him against Spidey in the VS mode, which is why I felt inclined to include a punch to the kisser by Speederman.

I've gotten back into playing TF2 on the PC this week. Goddam that game is good times. The new Pyro update is cool, but fuck me if I don't spawn and get gang-raped 5 seconds later by the six Pyro/Medic combos running around in a group all with the upgraded Flamethrower and Flare Gun. I think I'm close to getting the first upgraded weapon, whichever one that is. I'm sure most people cheat their way through the achievements needed to unlock that shit, 'cause I started playing the day the update came out and already a shit load of people had multiple upgraded weps. Ah well.

Iron Fist. Penciled, inked, then *scanned and colored in PS7:

*edit

Went to Nashville with the wife and daughter to visit some friends we haven't seen in a while. Of course, I did no drawing or work while there but before I left I had gotten myself trained to do at least one sketch or drawing a day in addition to my other work. Here's a collection of some of the pieces I'm most happy with. Most were done all digitally in either Painter X or Photoshop, some were pencils which were then colored digitally. Some were done very quickly and are very rough, others I spent some time on. The Nightcrawler piece I decided to take further and turn into a digital painting and the colors posted below are a work-in-progress.

I loved the shit out of it as a kid and caught part of it on TV the other day. A fucking classic. I'm kinda surprised by how many people have never heard of it, I know it was a bomb when it came out in '85 but I figured it might have a bigger cult following. Well, I felt compelled to do a fast sketch so here it is:

"The Eleventh Commandment". Done completely in Painter X and Photoshop 7.

Something I've been wanting to get back into for a while now has been inking and painting traditionally. Working digitally definitely has it perks, but I miss actually getting my hands dirty and also not having Layers and an Undo key to fix any mistakes I may make. It's great to have but I feel like it becomes a crutch when you really don't have to worry about fucking up. So last night I busted out my brushes, inks and markers and just went nuts for several hours. I fucked up a lot, but I still had fun and was fairly happy with a few pieces. I've recently become a huge fan of a comic artist named Mitch Breitweiser. He does some amazing brushwork with inks and goauches and posts a new sketch on his website almost everyday. Always incredible stuff. I'd like to get to that point where I can just confidently bust out a sketch with inks.

One of the pieces I did last night was a fast sketch of DC's Captain Marvel done with brush and Prismacolor markers. Now, I was somewhat happy with it, but it fell short of what I was going for. So tonight I decided to scan it into Photoshop and using the grayscale as a guide, just completely redo it. Heh, right back to my crutch. The result though is a piece I am much happier with:

And the ink/marker version:
