Superbowl

Off to the Superbowl we go after our 19-7 win where I had commited to do as many push ups as points we scored if we won. So right after the win we counted out 19 good ones, thank goodness we didn't score again.

Update

Quick Update, we lost our first playoff game in the regionals and got bumped back down into the local superbowl playoffs. We won our first game in that bracket and we play today at 11:30 against a team where the 10 year old QB can throw 30 yards. It will be a tough contest.

Playoffs?

So, we beat the last regular season pretender 34-12, Woot. We are the number one seed in the Central Mass Pop Warner league, first game is against a team we already beat 19-0, that is Wednesday night. If we win we play Saturday against a team we have not played yet, one we scouted the other we know nothing about for the Central Mass championship. The winner goes to the State Championship semi finals.

Last Tuesday we showed game films to the team and parents a local movie theater, totally cool. Thursday to ended practice early for the kids to show off TD dances since they are not allowed to do it in a real game. Fun times.

Looks like a busy week ahead.

What a Difference

What a difference a year makes. Last year our Pop Warner team went 0-11, this year we are 7-2 and have only lost to teams that are from bigger divisions as us. We beat a contender this morning 13-7 and it looks like we will be playing for the Central Mass Championship that may culminate in a trip to Florida for the Nationals.

One more regular season game until the playoffs start. I can't wait.

Weekend

Ok, so working in an office is not as bad as I remembered. No kids plus lots of AC is not a bad combo so far. Again, I have worked from home for 10 years so the first day was like the first day of school for the new kid. Half the people ignoring you and the other half being WAY too nice, it has already started to reach an equilibrium - getting to meet everyone and they are just normal.

First real Pop Warner game on Sunday. I lost my starting right guard (not the deoderant) to a broken hand. Get this, 10 year old kid broke his hand a week and a half ago during a scrimmage. He finished the game, came to prcatice on tuesday and taped it up and grimmaced the whole time while DOMINATING. Next day went to the doctors and he is out for the year - that is one tough kid.

I think we can overcome because the offensive line is blocking well and we have top end speed in the backfield.

Update Sunday night or Monday. Boomer out.

Big adjustment

I have worked from home for the last 10 years but recentley was laid off because the company I worked for was sold and I was deemed redundent.

So, yesterday I started a new job. In an office, where I can't surf any website I want and I can't check personal email. UGGhhhh.

Less pay (for now) more hours and I am in an office. At least it is employment.

Jamboree

We represented!!

We beat the Town of Chicopee 28-7 and it wasn't even that close. The only touchdown they scored was 40 yards and was their only first down of the day. We lost containment on a role out pass that the quarterback ended up keeping.

The offensive line did well, I kept substituting players in when I saw wrong technique or less than 100% effort and it seemed to keep the kids focused.

Scrimmage

We scrimmaged another town last night, each team ran 10 plays on offense in a row. The kids seemed to think it was a tie 21-21 but we never moved the ball for down and distance so I think maybe each side had three big plays.

Our defense looked pretty good for not having a lot of live practice.

I coach the offensive line mostly, they had an uneven effort. How do you get 5 soft suburban 10 year olds to act like bullies when all they are told to do every day is be nice?

That is why I love youth football. For three months the kids get to do what they are always told not to do. Keep your hands to yourself, no pushing, no bullying, stop running, no hitting. It is a perfect release for the kids but they just don't know how to unleash.

Back to practice for three more nights and we play a double header on Sunday since we are hosting the Jamboree and there is an odd number of towns.

Football

First full week of practice is down. 2 kids quit and 2 more should but might not.

Mostly offensive training so far. We have had our share of ups and downs, installing both the double wing and the pro set. It is a lot for 10 year olds but we are getting there. Thursday night we had some practice before we scrimmaged the B team's defense. I thought we were going to get crushed but we moved the ball forward on every play but one. We have another town coming in Monday night which will be a better test.

Olympics

It has been a a few Olympics since I was really interested, but this one has been fantastic. Not because of Phelps and Co but because my kids are Soooo into it. My 10 year old likes it, my 5 year old daughter can't get enough of it and my 3 year old son is mesmorized. He knows "that swimmer" is really good aka Phelps.

My daughter now wants to jump of the high dive, ummmm honey, lets try a little gymnastics or straight diving first.

First practice

So, as a few of you know I am a Pop Warner Football coach during the fall. I taught defense last year on the B team of 9-10 year olds and we went 0-11. The defense looked terrific every practice but come to find out the offense was just so much worse.

Well this year I am the offensive and defensive line coach on the A team and tonight was our first practice. Guess what, these kids actually listened and understood what I was saying this time. Not sure if we will win a game but I can't believe how much difference there is in comprehension from age 9 to 10.

Wish me luck, I will keep you updated wether you want it or not.
